Experts say many women have cut alcohol out of their lives to proritise their wellbeing, with reality TV stars Natasha Spencer and Helena Sauzier living examples.

It might well be the season for festive booze-ups, but more and more young Sydney women are ditching the drink and planning on celebrating a sober New Year as health and wellness become the priority.

And it’s not just waking up without a hangover they’re enjoying – they’re seeing weight loss, increased energy and even better moods.

Former reality TV star Natasha Spencer, 28, quit drinking seven months ago and has never looked back.

“Drinking has always been a big part of Australian culture,” Spencer said.

“With New Year’s Eve coming up, so many of us get drunk on New Year’s so it’s nice to be able to start 2022 fresh, without any regrets and without the hangover.

“The health benefits are endless. The mental clarity that I have, the energy …

“I used to have problems with gut health and having no alcohol has definitely helped with that as well as bloating.”

Clinical nutritionist Lexi Crouch has noticed more of her clients cutting alcohol to improve overall wellbeing.

“It’s becoming very popular now,” she said.

“It really does take a toll on your mental health and also physical performance as well. Some benefits include increased mood and increased energy, particularly if you are a gym-goer.

“When you quit alcohol, your quality of life goes up.

“Your energy is increased, your mood increases and your relationships improve as well because you’re more present and you’re not in different altered states. From a scientific perspective, all of your chemicals are a lot more balanced.”

Former Bachelor contestant Helena Sauzier, 27, is four months sober and has noticed an improvement in her quality of life.

“To be honest, it (alcohol) didn’t benefit me in any way,” she said.

“I thought it did. I thought it relaxed me, made me more enjoyable to be around until I realised it does the exact opposite.

“I didn’t realise how much it dulled my senses and impacted my freedom, my self-esteem, my body, my relationships and ultimately, my life. My childlike wonder is back in full force.”
