Veteran chef Neil Perry recognised as one of the world’s most iconic food figures at Las Vegas awards

Neil Perry, who shot to fame in Australia for his famed Rockpool restaurant, has won the Icon Award at the 2024 World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards in Las Vegas.

Veteran chef Neil Perry has been recognised as one of the world’s most iconic food figures.

Perry, who shot to fame in Australia after opening Rockpool in the eighties and now has Double Bay’s Margaret, won the Icon Award at the 2024 World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards in Las Vegas.

The 66-year-old was presented with the evening’s most prestigious individual award for his tireless efforts in advocating for Australia’s food industry and it’s valuable producers.

“Receiving the Icon Award in recognition of my 40-year career as a chef and restaurateur is an incredible honour,” he said in a statement.

“Having peers and diners from around the world recognise my place and achievements in this amazing industry, which has so many distinguished and worthy personalities, is truly humbling and something I never anticipated.”

Perry, who over his career has operated 10 restaurants, now joins previous Icon award winners like Andoni Luis Aduriz, Wawira Njiru, Dominique Crenn and José Andrés.

The accolade comes after Perry’s Margaret was named as the third best steak restaurant in the world.

It also comes at a time when Perry’s colleagues like Kylie Kwong and Tetsuya Wakuda have announced their retirements.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Perry said he had no signs of slowing down.

“If anything, I’m doubling down on the industry,” he said.

“I’m spending $12m building a precinct around Margaret. I’m positive about the industry and I love doing what I’m doing.”

Innovative seafood chef Josh Niland and his wife Julie Niland also attended the black tie event in Las Vegas, after their restaurant St Peter was announced at number 98 in the 51–100 longlist last week.
