All it took for Meryl Streep to sign on for season two of Little Big Lies was a quick text from Nicole Kidman.
Kidman explains in Foxtel Magazine’s June cover story that the show’s writer Liane Moriarty wrote a new character called Mary Louise and specifically requested Streep.
Kidman sent Streep a text but it was only after Big Little Lies cleaned up at the Golden Globes, winning five of its seven nominations, that three-time Academy Award winner Streep wanted in.

“We didn’t know Mary Louise was Meryl’s real name, but Liane knew and she wrote it and then said, ‘I want Meryl Streep’,” Kidman says.
“Reese [Witherspoon] and I said, ‘We can’t get you Meryl!’ but then I sent Meryl a text and, when she responded after the Globes, Reese and I were literally screaming on the phone with each other!
“She wrote: ‘Well, this just means I have to do it, huh?’ ”
Streep joins an already star-powered cast of Academy Award winners including Kidman and Witherspoon, Golden Globe winner Shailene Woodley and Emmy Award winners Alexander Skarsgard and Laura Dern.
The first season ceased airing in February 2017 and fans are itching for season two after a long, painful wait.
It premieres on Monday, June 10 and is available in Australia exclusively through Foxtel.
