Acting veteran Bryan Brown is resigned to the fact he will be called Grandpa after becoming a grandfather for the first time.

“It is impossible not to be called grandpa, whether I like it or not,” he told Confidential.

Brown and actor director partner Rachel Ward became grandparents a week ago when daughter Matilda gave birth to a son named Zan.

“He’ll be called Drongo,” Ward joked when asked what Brown would be called by their grandson.

Matilda is one of three children to Ward and Brown, who are also parents to Joe and Rosie.

Matilda and My Kitchen Rules chef partner Scott Gooding, who recently launched his new eatery at Westfield Miranda called The Good Place, have been together for more than a year. Ward and Brown, meanwhile, are on the promo trail together for their new film, Palm Beach, in which he starred and she directed.

“It is about friendship, family, relationships and a certain age that people get to and life continues to throw up things that you have to deal with,” Brown said.

“Life is to be lived; the film is very much about that, you keep living life until life leaves you.”

It is the second directorial effort for Ward, who last helmed a film in 2009 with Beautiful Kate. Palm Beach will have its Australian premiere at the Sydney Film Festival next month.

“It is the existential crisis of late middle age and it is not just for women,” she said.

“I don’t know why we always think it is women, because it is post children leaving home and … we are all supposed to go into a tail spin but the blokes have it, too. It is really what it means to be human and the fact with Baby Boomers there are so many of us all charging towards the later epoch.”
