MARRIED At First Sight hasn’t even started yet but already some of the NSW contestants have been forced to defend their comments on the show.

The Channel 9 reality series is one of the biggest on TV and the promotion of this year’s batch of singles has already caused controversy.

In particular is Dean Wells, 39, whose audition tape showed him explaining he wanted a girl who “listens to me and I want to be the alpha male and she needs to respect me as the man”.

The creative director told Confidential he was “very nervous” about watching his episode air on Monday night after the reaction to the commercial.

“I probably could have worded stuff better in that promo. I never meant it sound like I’m controlling and dominating. I can see why people thought that but it’s not the person I am,” he said.

“I’ve never been in the public eye before ... and I’ve suddenly realised what I’ve got myself into.”

Meanwhile 34-year-old IT account manager Troy said that although he said he was looking for a girl who was a “cross between Barbie and a cheerleader”, he’s not as shallow as he sounds.

“That description is over-simplistic,” he said. “Barbie isn’t the right word because it does imply some sort of fakeness, one-dimensional type of character, I do like the way Barbie looks, but I want a natural Barbie, a girl who is like a cheerleader, but naturally built to be a cheerleader, not fake in any respect.”

The duo are joined by fellow NSW grooms Justin, 41, Nasser, 50, and Ryan, 29.
