TODAY host Karl Stefanovic’s estranged journalist wife Cassandra Thorburn is unlikely to land a job at rival network Seven’s Sunrise.
But while a source close to the show told Confidential it had yet to hear from Thorburn or her representative, Max Markson, executives of the breakfast TV show would be willing to meet with her.
“Execs at Seven haven’t spoken to Cass,” the source said. “Sounds like Max Markson may be mischief making. We’re willing to hear her out, meet with her but as with all jobs, any recruitment would be based solely on merit, and not as a slap in the face to the opposition. Seven doesn’t do that.”
Thorburn employed Markson as her representative as news broke she and Stefanovic had split after 21 years of marriage.
He has been shopping her around to various media although not for a tell-all but for ongoing journalism and columnist work. Thorburn was a successful TV journalist before becoming a stay-at-home mum to the former couple’s three children.
Channel Ten consultant and veteran news director Peter Meakin told The Australian newspaper’s Media Diary he doesn’t think there is much interest in Thorburn at his network.
“In television terms I don’t think it’s a great story,” he said. “I’m really sorry for them on a personal level but I can’t see that Nine would buy it, and Ten doesn’t really have the vehicle because The Project doesn’t go in for these sorts of deals. I think if it were to show up on Seven, the audience would say ‘here’s Seven having a go at Nine’ and would discount it on that basis. These sorts of stories don’t tend to do terribly well on television, even if someone was mad enough to buy it. It’s really sad but we’re not talking about Donald Trump here, are we?”
