Joel Edgerton wins GQ Man of the Year and debuts his new flame stylist Christine Centenera
It was the perfect night for Hometown boy Joel Edgerton at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in Sydney on Wednesday night. Not only did he choose the night to go public with his relationship with stylist Christine Centenera, he took out Man of the Year.
Hometown boy Joel Edgerton chose last night’s GQ Men of the Year Awards to debut his relationship with stylist partner Christine Centenera.
It was the perfect night, with 44-year-old actor Edgerton taking home the main title and celebrating with his new girlfriend, the high-profile stylist and fashion guru from Vogue Australia.
“My focus next is about what I can make at home (so) I can celebrate two of my favourite things … being at home and making stuff, so that I am not always away,” Edgerton told Confidential while sporting a black eye he said was the result of a camping accident.
“I went camping with a brand-new campervan yesterday and I put the awning out and I got hit in the face,” he said. “I wish I had a better story.”
The recognition acknowledged Edgerton for his critically acclaimed directorial debut, Boy Erased, in which he also stars alongside Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe.
In 2011, he took home Man of the Year for The Great Gatsby.
Held at The Star Event Centre, no expense was spared for the lavish black-tie event, in its 20th year, that attracted a raft of familiar faces.
In her first trip Down Under, model and actor Emily Ratajkowski lived up to her diva reputation, with model Jordan Barrett close by at all times.
Receiving the International Woman of the Year award, the 27-year-old brunette said modern feminism was not bound by rules.
“It is about defying stereotypes, it’s about pushing boundaries, it is about being in a string bikini on the beach and also at a protest,” she said.
“I don’t think any of us have to limit ourselves to a box. To the perception someone might force on you. I hope that young women across the world, but also in Australia, and men as well, will take that to heart and fight the good fight.”
Earlier this week Ratajkowski divided the nation when she posted an eye-popping image of one of her barely-there bikinis to social media.
“I don’t even think of it as a skimpy bathing suit,” she said. “It is just that I want to get the best tan.”
Naomi Watts, in town ahead of McHappy Day on Saturday, was there to support photographer Cameron Bloom and his wife Sam, whom she will play in upcoming feature film Penguin Bloom.
Comedian Joel Creasey was a standout, taking a public dig at the reality show that launched his TV career — and Shane Warne.
Describing I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here he said it’s “that show where they find 12 celebrities who just happen to have six weeks available, so really high-calibre people, and I was like ‘I can go for a year, I’m available, how long do you need me for, I’m free as a bird, me and Warnie’.”
Other recipients walking the black carpet included GQ Legend Michael Clarke, Sporting Legend Kurt Fearnley, Actor of the Year Keiynan Lonsdale, TV Actor of the Year Dacre Montgomery and Sportsman of the Year Robert Whittaker.
GQ Woman of the Year Elizabeth Debicki could not attend because she is currently on the promo trail.
American supermodel Lucky Blue Smith won the International Man of Style gong saying: “It is really cool men can have the opportunity to dress how they want without being criticised.”

Former Home And Away actor Pia Miller wore a white gown as she walked the carpet with fiance Tyson Mullane.
“A man of the year to me is comfortable in his own skin. He has integrity, loves what he does and makes a difference,” Miller said, adding of her wedding plans: “There was a time where we knew exactly what we wanted to do and when and where but then I got this job (a movie shooting in Queensland) so we will come back to that. We will wait until the perfect time.”
