Despite being one of Australia’s premier actors, Weaving confessed he has never attended the Logies.

“They (the awards) are just promotional tools for the TV channels themselves,” he says.

“I don’t like awards because I am generally being used by someone else to try to promote their thing.”

Although Weaving’s nomination — his first in 12 years — is in a peer-assessed category, he said he felt the awards were a popularity contest.

Weaving said he felt there were too many TV awards nights in Australia.

“I think we should get our acts together. We have too many TV awards nights,” he says. “I would rather the AACTA Awards just focus on film and the Logies focus on TV and there weren’t about pop and weren’t about popularity. Then the awards might mean something.”

Weaving’s announcement comes days after Confidential revealed Channel 7 was scaling back its attendance at this year’s Logies on July 1.

A spokeswoman confirmed Channel 7 would not send its heavyweight talent including Sunrise hosts Samantha Armytage and David Koch, and Morning Show hosts Kylie Gillies and Larry Emdur.

“The change of location, to the Gold Coast from Melbourne, has made life difficult,” the spokeswoman said. She said only nominees and a very select few others will be attending.

An insider at the network claimed Seven bosses felt the Logies had become less relevant to the industry in recent years and the money used to fly and accommodate talent on the Gold Coast could be better spent elsewhere.
