Double Bay residents struggling to find a park after severe crash

Double Bay residents’ prized suburban carpark has been closed for weeks following a fiery crash. Is the stress of finding a park why Sydney socialites have jetted off to Europe early this year?

It looks like the eastern suburbs elite have staged an early summer exodus – destination: Europe. Why? Maybe because their prized suburban carpark has been closed for weeks following a fiery crash on June 2.

Well-heeled Double Bay residents have been put out after a local motorist accidentally put their car in drive instead of reverse, prompting the luxury vehicle to go straight through the top level of the carpark, destabilising the entire building on the corner of Transvaal and Cross Sts.

It meant more than 400 car spaces have been unusable in Double Bay for weeks.

“(The driver) had an awful accident while coming out of the carpark,” one insider said.

“Remarkably they came out unscathed, however, the accident caused a lot of damage to the carpark and surrounding buildings.

“It’s been really frustrating not having all that parking available for so long. “

The accident comes as many of Sydney’s elite have kicked off their annual journey to Europe to bask in the warmth of the northern summer earlier than usual – perhaps to save money by going outside of the school holiday schedule, or perhaps because they’re tired of trying to get a park around Double Bay.

Greece seems to be the destination of choice – it’s where Bellevue Hill-based swimwear designer Tash Oakley and her bevy of besties are living it up, while Roxy Jacenko will head to the island of Mykonos after a visit to Istanbul, Turkey.

Real estate agent David Malouf is currently in Greek capital, Athens, before his next stop, Beirut.

Meanwhile, racing royalty Kate Waterhouse and her family are in London for Royal Ascot, while Real Housewives of Sydney star and Double Bay resident Victoria Montano has just returned from Monaco.

Influencer Chloe Fisher is in Formentera while special forces combat veteran Heston Russell is in Sardinia.
