It’s led by a world-class food team, has family-friendly sittings and free parking - this restaurant is Sydney’s best kept secret.

Chu by China Doll in the West HQ complex at Rooty Hill might just be Sydney’s best restaurant that you didn’t know existed.

Chu is the third instalment of the famous China Doll brand, which has the flagship restaurant in Woolloomooloo and China Lane in Angel Place.

It was originally opened in 2019 but quickly closed because of Covid-19 restrictions and has since had to close its doors three times.

Now it has once again officially reopened with a top quality food team behind it. It also caters to families and is in a complex that offers free parking (which is very rare in Sydney).

The kitchen is run by head chef Ciseung Kim (known as Kenny) who has worked under China Doll’s heralded executive chef Frank Shek.

While China Doll is known for it’s harbourside location, Chu is quickly becoming known for it’s Sunday yum cha offering.

“We wanted to offer something different from what you usually get at China Doll,” said Kim of the offering. “It’s helped us be part of the community and part of their Sunday ritual.”

Meanwhile the restaurant is run by Marcus Pangilinan, who has also worked at iconic city establishments like Bistro Moncur, Hotel Centennial and Opera Bar.

Pangillnan, who is a Blacktown local, jumped at the chance to work with Shek and his team and the fact he would be moving back to the area was a bonus.

“I’m a proud westie boy and I’m proud of the food scene that’s developing here,” Pangillnan said.

“People who come to Chu are gobsmacked by what we are doing.”

West HQ CEO Richard Errington said the reopening of Chu by China Doll showed the momentum being gained post Covid-19.

“We are delighted to be able bring world class opportunities and experienced specialists at the top of their game to West HQ.”
