In a world first, a fine dining restaurant has teamed up with leading chef Nelly Robinson to create a bespoke 11-course degustation menu incorporating KFC ingredients, over three nights at a secret location in Sydney in April.
Around 20,000 people have already put their names on the waitlist to try and win a spot at the table at the event, designed by fast food conglomerate KFC.
The quirky pop-up has quickly made international news, with popular US talk show host Jimmy Fallon referencing the one-off activation in his monologue on Friday saying “most fine-dining meals don’t come with a spork.”
“Oncore by Claire Smyth just opened up and everyone is saying how hard it is to get into. But we’ve come past, and with a fast food restaurant, blown it out of the water,” Robinson said.
“I’ve had people asking me at nel how they can get it ticket.”
Robinson, who is head chef and owner of Sydney’s nel, has created the world first menu using KFC ingredients including supercharged wings cooked over a bed of charcoal and a gravy candle that melts and you dip your potato bun in.
There is also a dessert dish made from the brand’s famous fries which includes wattleseed ice-cream.
Robinson is finishing off the fine-dining experience with wine pairings and guests will eat of plates imported from Japan, not out of a bucket.
The only thing he hasn’t been given is the secret recipe to the 11 herbs and spices. That’s still in the vault.
Robinson is considered one of the countries finest chef, he’s worked at Michelin star restaurants and is known as the degustation king. He’s not worried about teaming up with a fast food restaurant will do to his reputation.
“I don’t give a sh*t what people think of me.”
“People have asked me why I’ve combined with a brand like this and really, when you boil it down, it’s because it’s fun.
“We’ve had a sh*tty last two years but redesigning this menu has brought a smile to my face. It’s a real joy.”
The combination of high- and low-end dining is part of a growing food movement across the world.
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl famously dines on KFC with top-shelf champagne after his rock concerts, while the former president of the United States snapped himself eating a bucket of chicken while on his private jet.
Last year, one of the popular viral trends was food bloggers transforming fast food into gourmet meals. One chef in America turned a MacDonald’s Big Mac into a fancy beef Wellington.
KFC’s degustation meal will cost the lucky punters who are selected $75 pp — which is roughly the same price as two buckets, or 42 pieces, of chicken — with the money going to charity.
