New Year’s Day parties have become something Sydney loves, with celebs flocking to Bondi’s Icebergs and Rose Bay’s Catalina’s to ring in the new year.

However this year both venues have called time on their popular events, leaving a new hospitality entrepreneur to pick up the baton and take the party south.

Owner Adam Micola of the newly opened seafood restaurant Bobby’s on Cronulla Beach said he was “excited” to host a New Year’s Day party for Sydney’s social set and locals.

“We think it’s a no-brainer. Celebrating New Year’s Day is unique to this city and who doesn’t want to still eat, drink and party by the water,” Micola said.

For more than two decades New Year’s Day parties have been the hottest tickets in town.

In recent years, A-listers, models, musos and celebrities have skipped NYE for NYD in a bid to be seen at what once were two of the most anticipated events of the year.

Maurice Terzini’s exclusive Icebergs NYD bash has been held for 20 years, luring actors Matt Damon, Chris Hemsworth and Adrien Brody, Victoria’s Secret model Erin Heatherton and Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim.

Terzini said the decision to change direction for a long lunch at the venue was a “financial” one.

“You have got to know when to stop the party. The vibe changes. It is also getting harder and harder financially.”

However his new venue, Jackson on George will host a New Year’s Day Rooftop Recovery Party in the afternoon with a line-up of DJs and a BBQ from chef Steven Sinclair.
