How does Totti’s with a side of soy sauce sound?
That’s how Merivale are describing their new Japanese/Italian venture, Good Luck Restaurant Lounge, which will open next early next year in the basement of the historic Burns Philp & Co building on Bridge Street in the CBD.
The restaurant, which is set to transport customers to 1970s Tokyo’s underground scene, is the latest project from Merivale Executive Chef Mike Eggert.
Eggert has given Sydney five iterations of his famed Italian restaurant Totti’s, and one in Victoria.
His latest version , Oti, which opened in May in the Ivy Precinct as a lunchtime takeaway restaurant, saw hundreds of people queue on opening day to try the sandwiches and pizza slices.
Eggert’s soon to be opened restaurant is an ode to the Good Luck Pinbone pop-up that he ran in 2017 before joining Merivale to open Totti’s Bondi.
Earlier this year, Eggert, along with his boss Justin Hemmes, went on a tasting tour of Japan to research their new venture.
“Pinbone, leaned into a mix of Italian and Chinese cuisine but Good Luck takes more inspiration from Tokyo. Think Totti’s but then add soy, dashi, vinegar with fresh herbs, citrus and chilli. It’s just a fun name and who doesn’t take a gamble when opening a venue?” Eggert said in a statement.
“It’s going to be a fun vibe, maybe a bit wild but not stuffy or elitist. It’s got that feel where you know you’ll lose track of time...it’s just great food with a side of party.”
This isn’t the only new opening the Hemmes owned hospitality empire has planned for 2024.
Middle Eastern restaurant Jimmy’s Falafel is set to open it’s second restaurant, this time on Oxford Street in Paddington near Merivale spots Fred’s and Charlie Parkers.
While the group also plans to open a new bar on George Street.
