Australian model Shanina Shaik and boyfriend Matthew Adesuyan could not be more in love with their one-week-old son, Zai.
The first week of motherhood has been “really eye-opening and so beautiful,” Shaik said from their Los Angeles home.
“He’s very sweet. I’m grateful he’s so good as a newborn. My mum’s mentioned he’s better than I was.
“He’s a hungry, growing boy. We’re so in love, all of us. We’re quite obsessed.”
Her mother, Kim, who announced the birth in a Facebook post, is staying with the couple for a month.
“With any newborn there’s some late nights,” Shaik told The Daily Telegraph, but added with the parental help she’s been able to get some much-needed naps.
The Victoria’s Secret runway star is the face of a new womenswear collaboration between Australian brands Ksubi and P.E. Nation, which she modelled for pre-pregnancy.
“Ksubi is my wardrobe necessity for denim,” Shaik said, “and athleisure is my uniform.
“I’m excited to get back to wearing little dresses and crop tops. But there’s no rush, and I don’t feel pressure to bounce back. I want to be healthy and safe for my baby, and do what’s right for my body.”
Baby Zai is already “very privileged” in the style department, she said, and has already been given a lot of brand-name baby gear. “His dad will be very involved in what he wears, because he’s a very stylish man himself.”
The Ksubi x P.E. Nation collection includes signature oversized tees and custom print bike shorts, which Shaik is living in right now.
“I have little jobs here and there. But I want to give a lot of time to my baby. You never get these moments again, so I really want to embrace all of this and take my time with work and see what feels right.”
Shaik described Australian style as on-trend, but always on the go. She said it’s coveted by her American friends, and something she’s proud to put on the world stage.
