Adam Demos on why sex scenes are important in Netflix’s Sex/Life

Aussie actor Adam Demos, who stars in the new series Sex/Life, says there is nothing gratuitous about the sex scenes in the popular Netflix show.

Aussie actor Adam Demos has defended the explicit sex scenes in hit new Netflix series, Sex/Life.

As the title suggests, the American television drama is full of, well, sex. Nothing gratuitous though.

“Most people will think that with the title but by the very beginning you realise this is a full-on character-driven story about relationships and choices and decisions,” Demos explained.

“The sex scenes in it really help drive the emotions of the characters, they are not there for no reason.”

Moments before jumping on a Zoom call with the Telegraph from Atlanta, the former Wollongong construction worker had received a text from a friend of his face on a billboard in New York’s Times Square.

Sex/Life, the much anticipated Netflix series he shot in Canada last year, is finally being released and as a global priority for the streaming service, is being promoted everywhere, including the Big Apple.

“What a blow-out,” Demos says, grinning from ear to ear.

“It is a pinch-myself moment, that is for sure and the title really catches your eye. I will definitely be sending the photo to Mum.”

“I have a really hard time watching myself in anything but to see the final product, regardless of the outcome, I am super proud of what we all created,” Demos said.

“The billboard is cool, don’t get me wrong, but I am just super proud I got to be a part of this show. This is a very unpredictable industry and so you might as well smell the roses. It is okay to embrace it coming out because you are a part of it so why not.”

Sex/Life is a TV drama based on BB Easton’s novel, 44 Chapters About 4 Men. It tells the story of Billie (Shahi), a suburban mother of two who is embroiled in a love triangle with her husband, Cooper (Vogel), and a lover from her past, Brad (Demos).

Demos scored the job thanks to executive producer Stacey Rukeyser, with whom he had previously worked on acclaimed US series, UnREAL.

“That is a huge deal for me,” he said.

“It (the show) feels like a real water-cooler conversation where people have their own take aways from it in what they think Billie should or shouldn’t do. It is great that everyone will have a different opinion because everyone has had a different experience in life.”

Demos, 35, came to acting comparatively late and appeared on a string of Australian shows including Home and Away, Winners & Losers and Janet King before heading to America.

All of those jobs help Demos put the world of Hollywood and fame into perspective.

In a case of art imitating life, Demos actually fell in love on set and he and co-star Shahi are now very much in a relationship.

“What I will say and I am always happy to say, is that I am a lucky man and it is happy days.”

Of the relationship, Shahi recently wrote on Instagram to mark Demos’ 36th birthday: “Not exactly sure how two people on opposite sides of the world could have more in common, were meant to meet, were meant to be together. But I do know I met my soulmate. I do know I found my forever. I do know I’ve loved him for a thousand lifetimes before and will love him for a thousand lifetimes more.”
