Larry Emdur and Jessica Mauboy reveal their Uber ratings

We asked celebrities for their Uber star rating and let them delve into how they got it – and one veteran TV host has a surprise reason for his low rating.

Larry Emdur attributes his Uber rating to a case of revenge.

While still ranking pretty high with a 4.79 out of five, Emdur believes he should score higher in the ranking system that tells drivers and passengers where they sit in the rideshare pecking order.

“I reckon that major mark down was from one fruit bat driver who was seriously angry with me because his mum missed out on winning a new fridge on The Price Is Right in 1996,” Emdur told The Daily Telegraph. “He’s been waiting a long time for that ultimate revenge.”

The Uber rating system is simple. After you complete your trip, riders rate their driver on a scale of one star to five stars, with five stars being the highest.

Conversely, drivers are also asked to rate their passenger using the same scale.

But since Uber first began to allow users to check their ratings on the app in 2017, riders have harboured a growing anxiety about how many stars their behaviour in the back seat will earn them.

Ultimately, the system is used to reward good drivers and passengers, while weeding out the bad ones.

Sunrise Weather Presenter Sam Mac revealed his rating of 4.75.

“The only possible reason I’m not a five star passenger would have to be my penchant for unsolicited SmoothFM karaoke,” Mac said.

TV presenter Angela Bishop has a rating of 4.82 after catching rides in Italy and France.

“When you go to the Venice Film Festival and open Uber you get offered a gondola or a speedboat,” Bishop told The Daily Telegraph.

“When you go to the Cannes Film Festival, your only options when you open the app are a limo or a helicopter. Try claiming those expenses at Channel 10!”

Sonia Kruger, meanwhile, has a rating of 4.81.

The Home And Away cast also shared their ratings. Sam Barrett, 4.91, said trying to keep hers high felt like being“back at school”.

“I get so stressed, I’m always so worried I won’t be able to catch an Uber if my rating was bad,” Barrett said.

Sam Frost blamed her less than perfect score of 4.72 on her “friends when they have had a few wines.”

Courtney Miller has an Uber rating of 4.76 and Rob Kipa-Williams revealed his rating of 4.81.

Australian Fashion Model Simone Holtznagel who has a 4.83 rating said she once got kicked out of an Uber for putting her hair up into a ponytail while in the back of a car.

“Ninety per cent of Uber drivers are really lovely but if the driver is driving dangerously, making you feel uncomfortable or just an over all bad experience, rate accordingly,” Holtznagel said.

Model and TV Presenter Erin Holland has a rating of 4.76 said she never gets stressed about getting a bad rating “because I’m not a shitty passenger”.

“I like seeing a good rating next to a driver’s name, if they’ve performed tens of thousands of trips and they have close to a five rating you know you’re in good hands,” Holland said.

“As for my rating – you always wonder what you did to not receive anything less than five stars.”

Australian Singer Jessica Mauboy, 4.93 said she “lives in Ubers”.

“I’ve never really thought about the ratings until you mentioned it, now I’m gonna strive for the perfect rating lol.”

Uber Driver Rosemary Paterson, 70, has been driving in Wollongong for four years and said her rating system “is quite simple”.

“I don’t worry about the two, three or four stars — I give them one or five,” Mrs Paterson said. “Five means you are welcome in my car at any time and one means sorry but never again.

“Bad language is one thing that I don’t tolerate and I see that a lot from young girls lately.

“I give them three strikes and they’re out.”

A spokesperson from Uber said the rider ratings were introduced in 2018 because “respect is a two-way street”.

“This policy meant that riders whose rating fell below a minimum average for the city would lose access to the Uber app, after several notifications have been provided,” The spokesperson said.

“Only a small number of riders have lost access to the Uber apps due to low ratings but since we introduced our rider ratings we’ve seen an increase in the average rider rating across Australia, as well as an almost 30 per cent reduction in poor trip experiences for driver-partners in Australia.”
