Jessica Mauboy late to Australian Fashion Week First Nations Show

Pop star Jessica Mauboy had people talking for all the wrong reasons at Australian Fashion Week.

It is not fashion without the odd faux pas.

But in pop superstar Jessica Mauboy’s case, it appeared to be a major gaffe when she showed up 37 minutes late to one of the most significant shows of Australian Fashion Week.

The star blamed heavy traffic for missing the start of the First Nations Fashion and Design Show.

Mauboy, 31, has sat front row at several shows throughout the week, including Bassike, Oroton and Romance Was Born, where she wore clothing from each of the designers.

The First Nations Fashion Design show featured seven labels on the catwalk at Carriageworks in Eveleigh to open the third day of Australian Fashion Week.

It is the first major runway collection featuring first nation labels, models, producers, musicians and artists.

Labels on show included Grace Lillian Lee, AARLI, Amber Days, Nungula Creative, Sown in Time, NGARRU MIIMI and Clair Helen.

Mauboy finally arrived at 9.37am and missed seeing work from the first two designers.

The star’s representatives said she was late because of heavy traffic and emphasised that she was wearing an Australian designer in Scanlan Theodore.

Also attending were musicians Mitch Tambo and Ngaiire, drag queen Jojo Zaho and model Samantha Harris.

“It is really beautiful to be here to celebrate our take on fashion,” Tambo said.

Jojo Zaho added: “It is one of those powerful and uplifting moments that I am just so happy to be a part of.”
