Why Daenerys will win George RR Martin’s Game Of Thrones

With just two seasons left to go, who will win the Iron Throne? As we settle in to enjoy the machinations of Season Seven, we run the rule over the four main contenders. This week: Daenerys

Emilia Clarke's character will survive next season of GoT

WHO will win the Game Of Thrones and end up sitting on the Iron Throne at the end of the series?

Basically there are four main contenders — Cersei Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow and the Night King.

Barring a monumental shock (which of course we cannot completely rule out because this is, after all, Game Of Thrones), it will be one of these four.

So which one?

As we settle in for the long-awaited season seven, we put the case forward for each one of them winning the Game Of Thrones.

Daenerys Targaryen has three fire-breathing dragons, which should mean everyone else is toast.

DAENERYS TARGARYEN

She’s spent six seasons saving slaves and learning to be a good ruler in the east. Now she’s heading for Westeros to try out those theories on the Iron Throne.

She has Yara and Theon Greyjoy’s fleet of Ironborn, an army of Unsullied, the Dothraki cavalry horde and of course three giant fire-breathing dragons.

At the moment she also thinks she is the rightful heir, because nobody (apart from Bran Stark) knows about Jon Snow’s real parentage.

Leaving that aside, she has spent six seasons building up to taking back the Targaryens’ place as rulers of Westeros.

She was the one who talked about “smashing the wheel” and changing the path of endless fighting that has gripped Westeros for so many years.

Of course Daenerys has to win. She’s dressed in white.

If there is any justice in this fantasy world — and let’s face it, there isn’t much — she has to win.

But justice doesn’t always go to the righteous, it usually goes to the one with the best army.

And let’s face it, Dany has that covered.

Remember back in season one, when Robert Baratheon was talking to his wife Cersei about the danger of the Dothraki? He reckoned they would smash the Westeros armies. And that was back when the kingdom was “united” and everyone would rally to the king’s standard.

Now it’s really just Cersei and Jaime and what’s left of the Lannister armies.

Plus Dany doesn’t just have the Dothraki, she also has the Unsullied, an army of elite spearmen

fanatically devoted to her.

Missandei and Daenerys inspect the Unsullied, her fanatical army of spearmen.

And then there’s the three dragons, which can fire up any opponent.

As has been seen in the past, dragonfire can melt even stone, so not even castles can stop them.

Taking Westeros will be easy for Dany. Holding it against the Night King will be the real trick.

You can watch the whole season live, in HD, on Foxtel Now.
