Steven Yeun opens door to return to The Walking Dead as Glenn

STEVEN Yeun is in Sydney for Supanova and has revealed he would be happy to return to The Walking Dead as fan favourite Glenn — in a dream sequence or flashback when Maggie has their baby.

The Walking Dead S7E16: Season Finale Preview

THE Walking Dead star Steven Yeun, whose beloved character Glenn was brutally killed by Negan in the first episode of season seven, has opened the door to returning to the cult show.

Glenn’s death in a polarising episode — even though it had been foreshadowed in the comic book series — brought to an end one of the show’s most popular characters.

His dying words to his pregnant wife Maggie were “I’ll find you”, which most fans took to be a reference to season four, when they were separated after The Governor’s attack on the prison.

But, with Maggie due to give birth soon, possibly in season eight, it does raise the question: Could Glenn return, in either a dream sequence or flashback, when Maggie has the baby?

“You know I will leave that open to what makes sense,” Yeun said.

“I wouldn’t want anybody to force anything, but if it makes sense I am totally down.”

Yeun, 33, is in town for the Supanova fan event at The Dome, Sydney Olympic Park, and will tomorrow walk the red carpet for the Sydney Film Festival screening of his acclaimed new Netflix film Okja which was lauded at the recent Cannes Film Festival.

Yeun has previously said he lobbied producers to give Glenn the comic book death at the hands of Negan. But does he regret that now?

“I don’t know if I regret that,” Yeun said.

“Part of me feels a little bit of pride for doing it, every character has a chance of losing the spark of their character over time, who knows if that would have happened, but one thing that I am sure of is that it left a lasting impact. It’s better to go out early than to go out flat.”

Glenn was the everyday hero of the show. Unlike Rick (a cop) or Abraham (a soldier), he was a pizza delivery guy. So who has replaced him as the show’s “average Joe”?

“I think it’s on the on the table for a lot of people,” Yeun said.

“What’s really cool is that death is really impactful and it gets to permeate to everybody so it will be interesting to see who carries that torch and if they keep carrying that torch.

“You never know it could be Maggie, Enid or it could be Carl. I have no idea, it could just evolve and last that way.”

In Sydney for Supanova, Yeun said this was his first time in Australia and he’s actually glad the weather is not good because “I don’t do sweating”.

Yeun has been enjoying commiserating with Australian fans.

“The vibe is warm, and inherently you are taking about Australia, so you are talking about nice people, and that welcome comes to you first,” Yeun said.

“Then they are sad about the death of Glen, which is a bummer. I feel bad, but it’s cool that it’s had such a lasting impact. It’s been really wonderful, everybody is very supportive and wonderful. No complaints.”

He is eternally grateful to The Walking Dead.

“I owe that show my whole start,” he said.

“From doing theatre in Chicago and, and sketch comedy and improv, and then I moved to LA and then that show opened the door and let me in to the business. Not only did it do that, it let me have seven years of honing my understanding and skills and growing. It was a really wonderful experience.”

And he still watches the show, even though he’s no longer in it.

“Yeah, the thing that’s real wonderful, is that you grow great relationships with your cast mates, so you want to see them, see what they are doing and how great their work is. You just want to support them,” Yeun said.
