TV trailer: Game of Thrones season 7

SEASON Seven of Game Of Thrones promises to pack plenty of punch into its seven episodes, with the first real trailer giving us a powerful glimpse into what we can look forward to.

Here are some of the big reveals from the trailer:

Daenerys is kicking some serious Lannister butt

Dany gets busy slaughtering Lannisters.
Dany gets busy slaughtering Lannisters.

We get several shots of Dany’s gang in action against the hated Lannisters, showing that she has wasted no time in making her presence felt in Westeros. We see the Dothraki cavalry slicing and dicing a Lannister force, with one of Dany’s dragons flying overhead in the final scene.

Perhaps more importantly, the Unsullied break into Casterly Rock, the ancestral home of the Lannisters and repaint the courtyard in the Lannisters’ favourite colour — red.

Strange alliances will come together

Cersei has the throne but for how long?
Cersei has the throne but for how long?

One of the key shots is someone coming before Cersei, Jaime and The Mountain in the throne room at King’s Landing. We can’t see the face but it looks like Euron Greyjoy. Given his niece and nephew are already in Dany’s camp and Dany’s army is slaughtering Lannisters, this makes sense that she needs allies. Interestingly The Mountain also has new armour. Getting ready for Clegane Bowl, perhaps? In terms of strange alliances, we also see Ellaria Sand and Yara Greyjoy sealing some deal with a kiss. Is this perhaps a reason to cheer for the Sand Snakes?

Jon is in the thick of things

Jon Snow looks to be in a lot of trouble this season.
Jon Snow looks to be in a lot of trouble this season.

We first see Jon Snow flanked by Sansa and Ser Davos at some council meeting — and Petyr Balish is nowhere in sight. We know he is not to be trusted, does this mean Jon has come to the same conclusion? Later we see Jon grabbing Balish around the throat in the tombs of his ancestors. While that is a normal reaction on seeing Balish, it does hint that something big has happened. This could mean Balish has managed to sow discord between the Starks, that Balish has revealed Jon’s true parentage and that his mother is Lyanna Stark — or has Jon even discovered that Balish betrayed and killed (adopted) father Ned Stark? It could even be all three!

Wanderers return

Will Sansa get to reunite with her sister Arya?
Will Sansa get to reunite with her sister Arya?

The big surprise is Melisandre is lurking around Dragonstone, where Dany has set up her base. This was her old stomping ground, back when Stannis was there and giving her Demon Babies. So has Dany bumped into her or did she search for Dany? And what will Ser Davos do when he arrives back there?

Also of interest is Arya, wandering alone in the frozen north. Hopefully she’s on her way to Winterfell and Sansa and not just in search of more Freys to kill.

Tantalisingly, we see someone locked up who is obviously infected with Greyscale. This is probably Ser Jorah but is he there to die or to be healed?

Finally we see Missandei and Grey Worm getting hot and heavy, although he lacks the necessary equipment to consummate their popular love. Or does he?

Where are the Walkers?

There was no sign of The Night King in the new trailer.
There was no sign of The Night King in the new trailer.

There’s plenty of life in this trailer but no sign of the undead. Well, almost. We do see Jon and Tormund running for their lives through the snow and a circle of men trying to watch their backs against some danger. We also see the Wall’s gate opening, which hints that Bran is coming south. But does this mean seasons even is all about the humans fighting — and the final season will be all about the Night King?
