New superhero series Legion will literally blow your mind

It’s set to be the best new cult TV series of the year. Legion takes the superhero genre and flips it around in this big budget debut on Foxtel.

Legion: Series Trailer

THE Walking Dead is back on Monday but, if you can’t wait for some cult TV, then one of the best new TV series of the year is about to hit our screens — with a blast — when Legion debuts on Foxtel on Thursday.

Forget everything you think you know about superhero movies and TV series. This will take you on a mind trip. Literally.

It’s the story of one of the more obscure comic-book characters, David Haller — better known as the son of Professor Charles Xavier of X-Men fame. But don’t worry if you’re not into X-Men or even superheros in general. This is something different.

It quickly becomes obvious that David (played by Dan Stevens) has some pretty serious issues.

We meet him in a mental hospital, where a series of flashbacks — and flash forwards — reveal the struggles he has been having. He is not sure whether he is insane, or something else.

The first episode — a double-length one — takes a fair bit of time to reveal what is really going on. Viewers are often left with their minds in a whirl — just like David — and questioning what is real and what is madness, again, just like David.

His bizarre existence is shaken up by the arrival of the girl of his dreams, Syd Barrett (Rachel Keller), who agrees to be his girlfriend but refuses to be touched. And when he kisses her, things get really weird.

The story begins to reveal itself as we discover David is being held by a mysterious group called Division 3, which features a strange enforcer known as The Eye. They are at once terrified of him and determined to control him.

Except he is freed by a rogue group of mutants, led by Melanie (Jean Smart) who tells him he is the key to everything and insists she can help him develop his powers and understand what is happening to him ...

The production values are amazing and the look of the series is far more like a big budget movie than a TV show.

It’s redolent with bizarre images, like the plump yellow-eyed devil who haunts David’s dreams and will no doubt prove to play a vital role in the series.

There is action, although not in the usual superhero style.

It is stunning, in every sense of the word.

Catch it on FX on Foxtel from 7.30pm on February 9.
