JIM Broadbent, the brilliant British star of stage, television and films such as Harry Potter, has revealed who he will be playing in season seven of Game Of Thrones.

In previous years, Game Of Thrones fans would be thrilled about the return of their favourite show in April. This year, with the show unlikely to hit screens until July at least, fans are restricted to searching for little teasers about the pivotal series.

Broadbent, most famously seen as Professor Slughorn in the last three Harry Potter films, was announced as a cast member last year and we were told he would have a “significant” role.

Now, in an interview with ScreenCrush, he revealed: “I’m a maester, an archmaster. I’m an old professor character”.

He went on to say he will appear in five of the seven planned episodes for series seven, which would indeed make him a significant character.

In the final reveal, he said most of his scenes would be with John Bradley, whom plays Samwell Tarly.

Fans instantly picked the character as Maester Marwyn, although, of course, in the TV show he might be called something different.

In George RR Martin’s A Feast For Crows, Sam tells Marwyn about the White Walkers and the old maester heads out to try and find Daenerys.

Broadbent also let slip he did not film on location, which means he hasn’t been off chasing around after Dany.

But he will obviously have a pivotal role to play.

At the end of season six, Sam and Gilly (and baby Sam) arrived at the Citadel in Oldtown so Sam could learn to be a maester and, hopefully, discover a way to stop the White Walkers and save his mate Jon Snow.

The TV series also showed something else significant — the astrolabe device that takes us across Westeros in each opening sequence is hanging in the Citadel.

Now, whether Broadbent’s Game Of Thrones storyline will keep him in the Citadel or whether he, Sam and Gilly will hit the road in season eight to help the fight against the White Walkers remains to be seen.

But these scenes need to be watched carefully, because there will be vital plot information revealed in them.

Game Of Thrones will return, probably in July, exclusively on Foxtel.
