Harry Potter? No, it’s Samwell Tarly and the Chamberpot Of Secrets

Game Of Thrones went into the Harry Potter playbook to help Sam Tarly break into a secret library. But he also helped reveal a few secrets to viewers as well.

Fans hated Ed Sheeran's cameo in Game of Thrones

GAME Of Thrones unleashed its inner Harry Potter in the first episode of the season, with the unfortunate Samwell Tarly apparently turning into the boy wizard in the secret Citadel library.

In between waiting for him to get a red-headed weaselly offsider (Ed Sheeran’s guest star turn didn’t turn up until later in the show, unfortunately), and a truly revolting montage of chamberpots, Sam broke into the secret part of the library and discovered all sorts of good stuff.

Unfortunately the only one that was revealed was dragon glass at Dragonstone but we did get some other snippets.

Jon Snow and Sansa need dragonglass. Wish Ser Davos had spotted it when he spent all those years on Dragonstone...

So, Jon needs as much of the dragon glass as he can get his hands on and Sam discovered there was a stack of it on Dragonstone. That’s obviously going to get Dany and Jon together pretty soon, naturally for an alliance and hopefully for some hot aunt-nephew pashing.

So that stomach-churning montage of chamber pots was worth it.

Meanwhile, some fans have been analysing the text in the book Sam was reading with Gilly, by watching it frame by frame and trying to read it.

One of the things that came out of that was that dragon glass may be a cure for greyscale. That could be why Shireen Baratheon was healed on Dragonstone.

So will Sam put two and two together and heal Ser Jorah? Will eating powdered glass be actually worse than greyscale? And given dragonglass kills White Walkers, what effect will that have on Ser Jorah? Will he turn into some White Walker-slaying demon?

It’s all very fascinating, as is the story that the contents of those chamber pots that Sam spent a seeming age cleaning out was actually fruit cake soaked in water.

Frankly, chewing on dragon glass sounds more appetising ...

Meanwhile, that leads us to the White Walkers.

We saw them marching south, at last. Apart from looking pretty intimidating and showing they have giants in their ranks, there has been some speculation that the featured one-eyed giant wight was poor old Wun Wun, last seen breaking into the gates of Winterfell and dying with Ramsay’s arrow in his eye (and about 300 others in his body).

Wun Wun, stuck with arrows at the Battle Of The Bastards.

But the key point about that is he died at Winterfell, well south of the wall. I can’t see Jon and Tormund ordering the dead hero of the battle to be dragged about 100 miles north and then thrown through the gate for the Night King to reanimate.

One other point about that scene — some people are suggesting they are actually walking over the sea, which the Night King is freezing as they go.

That sounds crazy but it is a possibility — if not now then certainly in a few episodes.

The general convention among fans is that, while The Wall has magically kept the White Walkers out for centuries, the Night King is now magically linked to Bran Stark and now that Bran has passed through The Wall, the Night King can also do so.

But what if he goes around it?

Where The Wall meets the sea is the imaginatively-named castle Eastwatch-By-The-Sea. Tormund and his Wildlings are heading over there, as are The Hound and the Brotherwood Without Banners.

And don’t forget The Hound saw the vision of the dead marching past.

What if the Night King freezes the sea and marches around?

He is definitely headed for that spot and it can’t be just because he likes a beachside holiday.

In the books, Melisandre talks of a battle there as well, signalling that we can expect the first big clash between humans and wights since Hardhome to take place there.

But possibly not until episode seven ...
