Game of Thrones: Aussie Brendan Cowell to join cast in major role

Aussie actor Brendan Cowell will reportedly join Game Of Thrones for season seven to play an important role as a tough Ironborn fighter.

GAME Of Thrones will reportedly have a strong Aussie flavour in season seven, with fan site Watchers On The Wall claiming that actor and writer Brendan Cowell has joined the cast.

The news first appeared on Cowell’s bio page on UK talent agency Hamilton Hodell, saying he will play Harrag Ironborn in the cult HBO series.

Cowell is best known for his roles in Love My Way and The Slap and the film Beneath Hill 60.

The note about him working under “various” directors on GoT is interesting, as each episode has a different director. This implies he will appear in multiple episodes.

Fan website Winter Is Coming reports that while George RR Martin’s books do feature a character called Harrag, he was killed by Ramsay Bolton back in season two.

However, the TV series often breaks away from the books and this Harrag could be a composite character or even a completely original character.

Theon Greyjoy will be helped or perhaps beaten up by Brendan Cowell.

In the books, Theon has a bunch of other uncles and half-uncles who want the Ironborn throne, not just the evil Euron in the TV series. Harrag could be one of those, or merely a tough warrior/adviser similar to that filled by the character Dagmar Cleftjaw (Ralph Ineson) back in season two.

Casting breakdowns that were leaked back in August called for a “warrior, aged 35-45: The character is a tough-looking bruiser with the attack skills of a pit bull, and the actor needs to be great at fighting. He has a ‘considerable’ amount of dialogue as well. It’s described as an ‘excellent part for a top-end actor’.”

Cowell certainly fits the bill and paparazzi shots of GoT filming in Spain in October may have captured Cowell in action, possibly bashing the snot out of lead character Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) — or rather his stunt double.
