Langer Trophy Wavell v Ipswich:

Although Wavell gave them a real run for their money, Ipswich once again found a way to turn it on in a second half surge, defeating their foes 28-16 at home.

In what was the last time they would gear up and play at the North Ipswich reserve, a truly star-studded team with Australian schoolboys and NRL contracted young-guns finished things how they started when beginning their campaign here months ago.

Wavell, with a 2-2 record, got the dream start to their clash against undefeated powerhouses Ipswich SHS, with Jai Camilleri scooting from dummy-half and scoring only minutes in.

Stunned by the early blemish to the scoreboard, it was none other than towering No.16 Rene Bagon to hit back and show Wavell why they are 4-and-0 to start the season

It was a jaw-dropping run from Bagon that saw him crash over. No wonder the Manly Sea Eagles fancy him.

Bagon got the boys rolling, with fullback Tyler Peckham-Harris next to join the party_putting on some mesmerizing footwork to set up wing Jamal Laurie for a cracking four-pointer.

A dazzling in and away step had Wavell defenders stuck and Laurie was delighted to be the one to move Ipswich ahead 10-6.

A questionable try but a try nonetheless from Broncos contracted winger Robertson Tusi-Tofu saw Wavell equalize it at 10-10.

The back and forth continued with Peckham-Harris taking matters into his own hands and giving Ipswich the upper hand once more.

Peckham-Harris dove over the line untouched with a sneaky scoot from dummy-half.

It wasn’t long before Wavell regained momentum and No.15 Harrison Hill was the one to capitalize with another try out of dummy-half.

Hill muscled his way over to really intensify things. 16-16, with 16 to go. We had a game on our hands.

But Ipswich, yet to fail in doing so, hit another gear and stormed away with it.

It was halfback Tristan Afamasaga who orchestrated it.

First with a lovely cut out ball over the defensive line centre Anton Naiyep and an even more miraculous cut-out to Laurie for his second try of the day.

Afamasaga, thanks to his pin-point-passing, set up two tries in the space of 10 minutes. Ipswich, once again in the winning column with a 28-16 triumph over Wavell.

Wavell’s best was centre Amos Tuialli and five-eighth Karl Oloapu. Amos was destructive with his ball-running, bumping off every defender in his path.

Oloapu, an Australian Schoolboy, was instrumental with such a smooth play-style. His kicking_accurate, passes_on target, defence _just brutal and critical in decision making.

It wasn’t enough to hold off the Ipswich boys.

Walters Cup Wavell v Ipswich:

A hattrick effort from unstoppable prop Mafiou Cherif proved the deciding factor in such a tense clash between Wavell and Ipswich.

Cherif, an incredible young rugby league player for Ipswich SHS, did it all to steer his team to a well-deserved 22-10 victory.

He started and finished the game running 110%, and provided go-forward and execution to earn a slow-burning Ipswich side their second win of the season.

Following a couple of early touches, it was no surprise Cherif dove over to score the first of the day. 6-0.

He went back-to-back to extend his team’s lead at 10-0 shortly after. It was lovely work from prop Cooper Cracknell to somehow get an offload away.

It was all Ipswich for the first half, but Presley Folau’s hardworking attitude saw Wavell bite back just before the hooter.

Folau, an athletic young second rower, penetrated the opposition defense before popping the ball up to halfback Xzandah Henaway on his left who was joined by the hip.

Folau made another huge play for Wavell to begin the second stanza. With a barnstorming run from close range he equalized the scores at 10-a-piece.

No.14 Jake Wade and Cracknell combined to set up Ipswich’s go ahead try. Second rower Josiah Grey diving over to make it 16-10.

Cherif then made it three. With 15 minutes to play, this was monumental.

With a Cracknell offload the play before to disrupt Wavell’s defence, it only took one more tackle for Ipswich to make it 22-10.

Cracknell was there at the ruck to make a big play. Indeed he did, feeding Cherif charging onto it. No one was going to stop Cherif. Not even all four defenders.

Wavell hooker Mason Phillips put in a brilliant grubber for his teammate Akeli Filipo in pursuit. Although Filipo finished it off, it was too late with only a minute left on the clock.

The Ipswich SHS Grade 10’s pulled away 22-16. What a sensational pre-show it was to a star-studded Langer Trophy clash about to get underway.

Langer Res Wavell v Ipswich:

The Ipswich SHS Langer Res team have dominated to run away 36-10 victors over Wavell SHS at the North Ipswich Reserve.

Early points with a couple of dazzling tries saw the home side rush ahead 22-0, a deficit even the best teams would struggle to come back from.

Cherbourg speedster Joven Gyemore got the proceedings underway with a cracking four-pointer thanks to an offload by halfback Isiah Mafi.

Mafi had defenders on him but found a way to get the ball free and it was Gyemore there waiting eagerly in support. 6-0

Try scoring machine Jeriah Vagana was next to pounce for Ipswich, diving into the left corner following slick through the hands play by Lesayne Tuiiasau, Mafi and Gyemore. 12-0.

Gyemore struck again but this time even more impressively, with Mafi setting him up once again.

With a swirling bomb launched up high, Gymore steamed through and lept in the air. The rest was history. 16-0.

Ipswich attacked one last time on the stroke of half time to lead 22-0 at the break. Five-eighth Brandon Tikinau picked up the scraps of a loose ball and then came the counter-attack.

An impossible offload by Vagana gifted Tuiiasau the Steden with nothing but open pastures ahead of him.

Wavell wing Caleb Brown got his team on the scoreboard to begin the second half with a heroic dive down the right touch line.

Halfback JahrelI selin-Jansen found fullback Oli Jones who threw a smart cut-out pass to allow Brown to stay in the field of play and avoid a try-saving attempt from Ipswich wing Jacobi Shaw. 22-4.

Ironically, Shaw scored a try of his own almost immediately after. A crisp cross field kick dabbled in the in goal by Tikinau retook the 22-point-lead for Ipswich.

Shaw was back in the action shortly after, on this occasion linking up with Gyemore down the left edge. It was a two man game with Gyemore finding Shaw and the wing streaking away 30m before drawing in Oli Jones to give Gyemore a try. 32-4.

Colourful head geared Hosea Kedzlie scored Wavell’s second and final four-pointer of the afternoon.

A grubber kick that ricocheted by No.17 Samu I’Iga landed straight in Kedzlie’s bread basket as he crossed the line.

Ipswich had the last say of the day with a feel-good try by LJ Nonu. The towering centre dashed away 60m to settle the scores at 36-10.

Preview:

Buckle up for three bumper games of live stream schoolboy rugby league when the Langer Trophy caravan returns to the North Ipswich Reserve.

Leading the parade will be the all-conquering Ipswich SHS side who will face off against a plucky Wavell State High.

Ipswich remain unbeaten in the Langer Trophy this year after a last-gasp win over title holders Palm Beach Currumbin last week.

In gruelling conditions at Tugun, it was Ipswich’s blockbuster forward contingent that proved the difference against a highly-fancied Palm Beach Currumbin.

Their forward leaders, including Gold Coast bound Josiah Pahulu, will be crucial once again as they face a tough challenge from a Wavell side who almost upset Keebra Park on the big stage last weekend.
