PREVIEW: Wavell hoping for ASSRL spark

With five players returning from a successful run at the Australian Secondary Schools Championships, Wavell State High is hoping it lights the fire under their Walters Cup campaign.

The powerhouse league nursery has struggled for consistency over the opening rounds of the Year 9/10 competition and it gets no easier as they match up against a high-flying Keebra Park on Tuesday.

The clash will headline and exclusive live stream double-header on KommunityTV, which will kick off with the Langer Reserves from 2.30pm.

The school’s Langer Trophy sides will not take the field until Saturday when they play as a curtain raiser to the Titans-Broncos NRL derby at Cbus Super Stadium.

Wavell State High had an impressive group of kids play their hearts out at the national championships in Redcliffe last weekend, but it was their work off the field that impressed the school’s coaching staff.

Jared Horne, Charlie Dickson and Azariah Toki-Mautairi were all part of the Queensland Maroon side which reached the tournament’s semi-finals while Keoki Koraba and Mason Phillips were part of the Queensland White side.

“We are very proud of how the kids are going but more about how the good reports of how they were in camp,” Wavell head coach Mick Roberts said.

“The way they conducted themselves not just on the field but also off it was great. I think they represented our school in a really positive way.

“We want them to come back better and be leaders in the group. Usually you get a bit of a confidence boost from being at that representative level. We want them to come back and work harder keep growing their game.”

Roberts said he hoped the players’ chance on the national stage could also inspire a fight back from the Wavell Walters Cup brigade who have struggled to string together strong performances.

“We have been inconsistent with our performances this year with that group,” he said. “Our expectations are a bit higher at Wavell but we haven’t been able to be consistent.

“Injuries have definitely played a part in that, but there is no excuse to how we have performed. We will have to keep working hard.”

Their Walters Cup opponents Keebra Park will also be determined to gain their own level of confidence from the nationals with centre Joseph Tupuse part of the Queensland Maroons set-up.

The Gold Coast school also took a busload of their senior players up to Redcliffe during the championships to train alongside the representative players and cheer on their schoolmates.
