Langer Trophy— Mabel Pk v Coombabah
Round four’s Langer Trophy clash between Mabel Park SHS and Coombabah SHS didn’t disappoint with a captivating 60 minutes of physical rugby league where the boys from Logan were able to hold off to win 28-16.
Mabel stormed out to a 22-0 lead before a second half comeback from Coombabah saw them come within a try. But it was too little too late.
Mabel second rower Tarawa Latu got off a spectacular offload to set up five-eighth Tevita Holaafolau for their teams first try of the day. 6-0
Some swift through the hands play by the Mabel backline saw them push ahead by 12. Halfback Julian Drinnan found centre Elijah Mikaio who threw a marvellous cut out pass to wing Luke Bossons lurking on the left edge. Mikaio added two more with a brilliant conversion from the sideline.
Towering prop Alex Leapai extended his team’s lead at 18-0 with an unstoppable carry from close range. Leapai got the Mabel supporters cheering when forcing an error from Coombabah in their first attacking run after his four-pointer.
Leapai wasn’t done. For his third big play in three minutes, he dove over for a double.
On-the-spot thinking by Leapai to charge blind and the telepathy of his hooker Daytona Tupuhi-Taoho to pop the ball to him saw Mabel lead by 22 going into the break.
After a cracking first 12 minutes of the second half which saw Coombabah hold out countless Mabel surges at the line, their heart on defence was finally rewarded.
Wing Ryan McCann handled a cross field kick by Mabel and dashed away 60m to score his teams first try of the match.
McCann’s wing partner Izayah Petricevich followed suit immediately with a 60m try of his own when returning the kick off. A superb sidestep from Petricevich saw him escape the first defender. He had gas in the tank to finish the job off. 10-0.
Coombabah’s courageous second half fight back continued with hooker Jhett Pilcher scoring with a smart scoot from the ruck. The conversion from centre Dwayne Ckwan-Fuimaono moved Coombabah within six, setting up a tense final five minutes with Mabel ahead 22-16.
Tupuhi-Taoho had the last say to settle the scores at 28-16 with a feelgood try on the siren.
Walters Cup—Mabel Pk v Forest Lake
Mabel Park SHS have triumphed 38-0 over Forest Lake SHS in a rainy affair at Slacks Creek Rugby League Club.
With their attacking firepower and brick wall defence, Mabel were able to dominate the possession and capitalise on scoring opportunities.
Mabel’s Petrus Kemp-Gregory tore through Forest Lakes defence to begin the proceedings. The young prop had too much steam to be stopped. 6-0.
DJ Talaepa scored a magnificent try moments later thanks to a break from Ronnic Starkey earlier in the set. Centre Andrew Soakai had room to move and found Talaepa with an incredible one handed offload. 10-0.
After a gritty Forest Lake fight back spearheaded by fullback Tom Parker and hard-running halfback Saifiti Saifiti, Talaepa was in the action again, setting up his team’s next try with a crisp cut out pass to his wing Tayvius Peo. 16-0.
Mabel centre Jedidiah Mulitalo made it four unanswered in the first half when crashing over his defenders to score a beauty. The Mabel boys loved this one. 22-0.
Mabel went into the break with a 22-point-buffer after a great first half of clinical execution.
Prop Motootua Kia made it a 28 point lead for his team immediately after half time with a bulldozing run from 15m out.
Mulitalo got himself a well earned double when extending Mabel’s lead at 34-0. Subsequent to a blitzing run up the middle earlier in the tackle count, the centre found the ball in his hands again and scored a four-pointer with ease.
TeriniQue Pinikera scored Mabel’s final try of the day with a Tino Fa’asuamaleaui-esque run from close range, settling the scores at 38-0.
