The second day of Football Queensland Junior Cup is in the books, and it finished with a fairytale, as Wide Bay North scored their first goals of the tournament in a stunning 2-0 win against Eastern Suburbs.

Both came in the first two-and-a-half minutes, and their defence managed to hang on against an increasingly desperate Eastern Suburbs as they ended their winless start to the tournament in sensational fashion.

KommunityTV’s exclusive coverage of the FQ Junior Cup included every match from two main fields on Monday, including action from the Under-12 Boys Gold and Silver Cups as well as the Under-12 and Under-13 Girls Cups.

Meanwhile on Field 5A, Wide Bay South threatened to put Eastern Suburbs to the sword with three goals in less than five minutes.

They scored their first after 90 seconds, then added two more by the five-minute mark to lead 3-0– and risk running up a big, big score.

But the Tigers bared their fangs in a fightback, pulling one back on six minutes as Wide Bay were punished for pushing too many players forward, before adding another two in the second stanza.

The stalemate wasn’t broken, leaving the points split in a clash of the 12 Boys silver cup Group D battlers.

It brought to an end a huge day of football at Maroochydore as 1200 of the state’s best junior stars – and, potentially, future Matildas and Socceroos – face off in the three-day event, which will culminate with finals on Tuesday afternoon.

The afternoon action on Monday was all about the kids from the regions as travelling academy sides got in on the action.

Townsville’s best rising girls were in action on field two as FQ Northern Yellow met Peninsula Power in the Under-12 Girls Gold Cup before FQ Northern Red took on Brisbane City in what was a tough contest.

FQ Central Coast, featuring the best young athletes from the Capricornia region, met local side Maroochydore FC, while FQ Wide Bay North took on Eastern Suburbs to finish the day.

There was a regional flavour in the boys tournament as well with the afternoon action on field five dominated by the regional academy squads.

FQ Central Coast Blue and FQ Far North and Gulf were in action in back-to-back matches, before the day’s action finished with FQ Whitsunday Coast and FQ Wide Bay South late in the afternoon.

The action on field five kicked off with a host of Under-12 Boys Gold Cup contests featuring some of the biggest clubs from Southeast Queensland including Rochedale Rovers, Peninsula Power, Gold Coast Knights, Lions FC and local contenders Sunshine Coast Wanderers.

The Wanderers boys doubled up on Monday morning with clashes against Lions FC and Gold Coast United, giving the home side a perfect chance to prove their finals credentials.
