FRIDAY’S MAIN TAKEAWAYS
GOLDEN GIRL KEEPS SKY SOARING
NSW Sky Under-15s golden boot frontrunner Madena Moussa kept her electric form going at the Emerging Matildas Championships on Friday.
Moussa took the ball half the pitch, beating three defenders, before pounding it into the back of the net in the opening minute to set the tone of NSW Sky’s quarter-final win over Malaysia.
The No. 9 finished with a double, taking her tally to eight goals for the week, as the sky blues cruised to a 5-0 win over the Malaysian side.
Moussa’s closest competitor in the race for the golden boot, NSW Sky teammate Jada Taylor, also finished with a goal.
QUEENSLAND SIDES BATTLE OUT QUARTER-FINAL THRILLER
Without question, the best of Friday’s quarter-final matches was the absolute thriller between Queensland Maroon and Queensland White.
Clearly two sides that are no strangers to each other, it was a low-scoring back and forth battle that ended with a dramatic penalty shootout.
There were two goals before that though, with the first coming from White’s Lara Burgers early in the second-half.
In what can only be described as a moment of individual brilliance, Burgers managed to chop the ball over her direct opponents head at the top of the box before finding the back of the net and giving her side the early lead.
The Maroons then got their chance to tie the scores some 20 minutes later, with a clumsy defensive tackle giving Akira Booth a penalty shot.
She converted in what became a precursor of what was to come.
Savannah Yared was the first to convert in the shootout, giving the Maroon the early advantage from the line.
Zara Softa then tied things up with White’s first penalty before Zahra Ahmed also found the back of the net to give the Maroons back the advantage.
Back-to-back saves from Maroon’s keeper Zoe Reader and White’s Phillippa Bromley ensured the Maroon’s advantage remained at 2-1 when Ruby Bird stepped up to the plate.
Her attempt was sensationally denied once again by Reader but Booth’s miss to the left side kept White alive.
A third straight save from Reader denied White the chance to tie the game, with a terrific strike from Payton Rose finding the top right corner to then send Queensland Maroon into the semi-final.
