Replay: NRL Schoolboy Cup Qualifier – Stretton State College vs Marymount College

Marymount College soared gloriously into the NRL Schoolboys (Langer Trophy) quarterfinals next week with a win over Stretton State College this afternoon.

A dramatic three tries in five minutes, and then after early in the second half to an inspiring Sam McAllister, wrapped up the win 36-8 for Marymount.

Marymount, winners of the Titans Schools League premiership, will play in the top tier schoolboy finals next Tuesday - all live streamed by www.couriermail.com.au, the Gold Coast Bulletin and News affiliates.

Wow, what a performance it was from Marymount to unseat last week’s Gee Trophy grand final winners, Stretton State College.

Three tries in four minutes cracked the game wide open, with Marymount’s McAllister and Cooper Bai crossing close to halftime, followed by Jimi Pedlow.

McAllister, coming off a long run, scored a surging try, as good a forward effort as you would see in a big match, when he refused to die on a 15m charge toward the line.

Then after Marymount failed to secure its kick-off, a penalty put Marymount deep in attack leading to a left spread to centre Bai who crossed for his second try.

Icing the cake was Marymount middle forward and captain Taj Harris who drove a hole through the defence.

He had options inside and out, and took the inside option to Jimi Pedlow who sprinted in under the posts.

From 4-6 down, a chasm had appeared between the trailing Stretton and a front running Marymount who lead 24-4 in the blink of an eye.

Stretton College had to be the next to score after halftime, but it was the bulldozing McAllister who crossed, followed not long after by dummy half Jaykob Brown. Joey Sankey kept kicking goals and it was 36-4.

Assistant coach Jason Hamilton said defence and discipline paved the way to victory after a nervous start.

“We pride ourselves on discipline and defence,’’ Hamilton said.

He said having been in a similar situation before and lost narrowly, there were some nerves initially but then they settled.

“This is an historic event for our school. We have never made it to the next level before,’’ Hamilton said.

To Stretton’s credit they did score again and fought out the match.

The disappointment of the loss should not wash away Stretton’s progress in schoolboy rugby league in recent years and the players, many of them young for the opens, should benefit from both the lows and highs of 2022.

Marymount’s rise is a glorious triumph and whoever they play in next week’s quarterfinals need to be on highlight alert.

Earlier in the day, Marymount scored first after eight minutes, with centre Cooper Bai expertly finishing a break by his left second rower Tallas Abell.

Abell had gapped Stretton on the edge, and with Jaykob Brown’s conversion, Marymount led 6-nil.

But Kayless Brown was next to score for Stretton, with a towering bomb unable to be secured, leading to a scramble to lose ball which was won by Brown.

An easier try Brown will never score and it was only 6-4 to Marymount.
