The Gee Shield and DeVere Cup schoolboy rugby league finals have been run and won, with Stretton State College and St Mary’s College winning one apiece.

St Mary’s claimed the Year 10 DeVere grand final named after Broncos champion Michael DeVere, while Stretton defeated St Mary’s in the open Gee Shield named after Brisbane warhorse Andrew Gee.

The games were two fantastic grand finals, with St Mary’s leading early against Stretton only to just hang on in the DeVere Cup, while the Gee Shield was in the balance until two minutes from full-time when Corey Nassif kicked a penalty goal.

So who were the Players of the Matches?

Jackson Rose (Stretton)

The Gee Shield winning fullback played a perfect positional game on a windswept Carina Tigers ground. His kick returns also asked questions of St Mary’s and swung Stretton forward from set one.

Braithen Scott (St Mary’s)

We nominated Scott as one of the players of the Queensland 15 years schoolboy team at the recent national championship and the St Mary’s halfback was at it again with another eye-catching DeVere Cup grand final win.

Jack McCosker (Stretton)

Stretton’s captain, the left edge second rower was a huge threat in attacking sweeps while also blocking St Mary’s thrusts when they had the ball. Also the Brisbane Tigers under 16 captain, his leadership was cherished in a tight clash.

Darcy Carswell (St Mary’s)

Carswell did not disappoint. Wearing black head gear, Carswell was a strong prop in the true tradition of Darling Downs front rowers. He gave St Mary’s good front foot ball despite heavy attention from the opposition.

Corey Nassif (Stretton)

Nassif would have been a man of the match contender with his powerful right edge runs and hard hitting defence. His goal kicking was also handy in a tight match.

Harry Eyers (St Mary’s)

Eyers was a potent middle force for St Mary’s with strong, effective running and rugged centre field defence. Stretton defended him well, but his effort levels were sky high.

Josh Beetham and Kayliss Brown (both Stretton)

Boy, these kids earned their drive-through hamburger and chips on the way home after playing full games - in both the DeVere and Gee Shield.

Noah Rogers and Tait Cameron (both St Mary’s)

Fullback Cameron lost little in comparison to his opposite number (Jackson Rose) who was named man of the match, while Noah Rogers got the job down from centre in both attack and defence.

Mana Smith and Max Black (both Stretton)

If Beetham and Brown deserved a Big Mac Meal (see above), then Smith and Black earned a Whopper after they also backed up in the Gee Shield clash as interchange players after also playing half a game in the DeVere Cup.

Stretton coach Rhys Jacks said the win was an underdog effort which kept the squad on track for its ultimate goal - promotion into the Langer Trophy.

“We were the underdogs as St Mary’s beat us in the round game and we were the younger team,’’ he said.

“This (Langer Trophy) is a goal. We had everyone from the rugby league program here today to see what you can achieve in this program,’’

The win was also a victory for rugby league co-ordinator Jayden Best who has brought this group through since year 7.
