Wavell SHS escaped by the skin of their teeth to avoid a Redcliffe SHS ambush and win a Langer Trophy thriller 20-14 on Wednesday night.

Redcliffe, chasing an historic first win in the Langer Trophy, led 14-6 but Wavell SHS’s lethal left edge, with captain Karl Oloapu at the helm, proved too hot to handle.

Right edge forward Naz Taua also played his part in Wavell SHS’s recovery as the home side came from the clouds to score three successive tries.

Redcliffe turned a 4-6 halftime deficit into a 14-6 advantage although they lost, vast improvement is evident across the last three weeks.

Redcliffe were very good. With interchange forward Connor Streak adding aggressive running and right edge forward Jacob Taulani finding his mojo, Redcliffe captain Jack Cameron had a platform in which to bring his boys onto the ball.

Cameron even did it all himself in the second half to recapture the lead, 10-6, with a typical 8m burst from the ruck.

It must have felt like old times again for Cameron who was so good for Redcliffe in last season’s Gee Shield competition.

One try followed another and at 14-6, Redcliffe were rowing clear of their rivals, although there was still plenty of time to play.

But Oloapu and his outside men love a left side raid and it was bombs away for Wavell who came hard at Redcliffe SHS.

Early in the match, Redcliffe SHS hit the front for the first time this season when right winger Oskar Byrne found the try line.

It followed a long run from the back field a few minutes earlier by fullback Bailin Haji who had turned defence into attack.

It took a cover defending tackle by Wavell hooker Jai Camilleri try bring him down, but the run was a momentum changer.

Haji was also on hand to shovel a pass off to winger Byrne for his try, and Redcliffe had struck a nice balance with Haji on the right and their best player against Keebra Park, Guy Waerehu in the front line playing left half.

Although Wavell hit the front 6-4 by halftime after Camilleri burrowed over, Redcliffe were the better side

Wavell has been a mounting yard for Redcliffe schoolboy talent, with the likes of schoolboys star Karl Oloapu, Ben Uini and past players Ben Te Kura and Drew Timms among the many Dolphins juniors at Wavell.

But now Redcliffe SHS is in the Langer Trophy, it is hoped Redcliffe talent will now remain on the Peninsula to play with their local school in the Broncos-sponsored competition.
