NSW and Queensland showed they are the teams to beat at the Australian schools sevens rugby championships in the 16s and 18s age groups but there was another state happier than anyone.

On the opening day of the three day tournament on the Sunshine Coast, the Victorian under 18s team drew with Queensland White in a surprise result for everyone.

“Last year we got beaten in every match and only scored two tries the entire tournament,’’ said Victorian coach Scott Adlington.

“This time we have scored three tries in our opening game for the draw so it’s also the first time we haven’t lost a game.”

NSW and Queensland have tipped each other as the biggest dangers in both the 16s and 18s competitions.

In the second round NSW I beat Victoria 65-0 and Queensland I beat NT 50-5.

“Queensland are our arch enemy,’’ Mewson said. “We are great mates off the fields but on it we have a job to do.’’

“NSW I and Queensland I are always considered the favourites,” Zeremes said.

“We’ve both been in the final for the past three years but I’m really liking what I’m seeing from WA, Lloydies, the Combined Eastern side, Victoria on day one.

“It’s also a game of rugby sevens at the end of the day so it’s about which team shows up and can ice those crucial moments because the game can always go either way.”

There were a number for standout performances on day one
