Churchie, although being able to see they were in front with the finish line approaching, tried to maintain their standards in the second period of play and did add a fourth goal.

Director of Football Derek Lennon said the side learnt from a first round defeat to Nudgee College and worked on some aspects of play during the week.

Aiding Churchie’s bounce back was being able to start Dehmie.

The Brisbane Roar Academy signing was a second half super sub last week but was available to play the whole match today.

Churchie scored early, then consolidated the lead with another two goals while having another couple of half chances.

Lennon said he was pleased with the team’s performance.

BBC Director of Football Cameron Williamson said unfortunately his side had become injury ravaged, with six top squad players unavailable, including five starting footballers.

“The boys are working as hard as they can, but it does not help when you lose six players from the squad,’’ Williamson said.

Williamson said if he was honest, he was just pleased to see the competition being played after fears earlier in the year there would be no more sport in 2020 due to the threat of the COVID-19.

In good news for BBC, the college’s 11As had a good comeback win after drawing round 1.

At Tennyson, home side St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace finished with a flourish to beat Toowoomba Grammar School 3-0.

Solomon Weldemarian scored twice and Malakai Love-Semira snared a single to snap the match open for Terrace.

The game was scoreless an hour into the contest, but the Terrace players found their feet in wet conditions to pilot home three late goals.

“The first half was a pretty close game and both teams had their chances,’’ reflected Terrace director of football Mitch Edwards.

“In the second half we took most of the chances

“It was a dominate performance in the second half. It was tough conditions which made it difficult for both teams. The ball was slipping around and the players sliding around but it was played in good spirits.’’

At Ipswich, Ipswich Grammar School claimed an impressive away win over Brisbane State High School, winning 4-1.

“IGS turned up the heat for an impressive performance in the second half showing strength in defence,’’ said IGS director of sport Nigel Greive.

“Brisbane State High worked very hard and refused to give up and their goal at the back end of the second half was testament to that. They had some good players who made it difficult for us in key moments.’’

He said Logan Harmer and Lachlan Pye made their debuts off the bench and Logan, in particular, was outstanding with a goal and assist.

Ggoals were scored by Darryl Barton, Elijah Vincent-Tooth, David Ishimwe and Logan Harmer, on debut. Unfortunately, consistent player, Pat Smith, finished the game injured.

BSHS director of football Matt Langmack had the highest of praise for IGS.

“They were very good. They were very slick and moved the ball way,’’ he said.

After a goalless first half, it rained goals in the second half with five shots crashing past the respective goalkeepers, while several shots also struck the posts.

“We were dogged and held them off for as long as we could,’’ Langmack reflected.

On the Gold Coast, The Southport School stood tall in difficult conditions to beat Nudgee College 4-0.

In slippery conditions on the Village Green, the better side won, but both teams were winners for the manner in which they handled conditions.

TSS director of football Joe Dolan said it was a credit to both school’s for considering “our whole communities’’ in getting on the pitch in conditions that could have led to the game being called off.

“We don’t make decisions just around our First team. We value every player, every team, every parent.

“We tried to do everything we could to get the game on.’’Dolan said once on the field, players were sensible in wet areas on the field.

“The referees were not sure but were willing to start the game,’’ he said, praising the boys from both teams for the manner in which they conducted themselves.’’

Once on the pitch, Nudgee College director of football Jamie Pybus said the better team won.

Dolan added: “We started really well and got in front. We knew that Nudgee had come off a great result, but we were confident that we had ability and a good team.

“Everything else fell into place.’’
