GPS football: All you need to know about the schoolboy season. Today, Grammar, Churchie and TGS

The finishing touches were being added to the Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane Anglican Grammar School and Toowoomba Grammar School First XI football squads ahead of the season starting on July 18.

The finishing touches were being added to the Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane Anglican Grammar School and Toowoomba Grammar School First XI football squads ahead of the season starting on July 18.

The 2019 champions Churchie will have a slightly different look with a “fair amount of experience’’ missing from last season.

But Derek Lennon, the Churchie Director of Football, was delighted to usher in a mix of grade 10, 11 and 12 players into the setup.

Churchie’s overall captain of football is Dominic Horwood, while Lennon nominated Horwood, Cyrus Dehmie and Jackson Simpkin as players to watch on the pitch.

Asked about the squad’s style of play, he said: “We want to play a possession based attacking, positive style that is attractive to watch.

“As with every year, we aim to be competitive and if things go our way maybe sneak a top three position.

“It is going to be a very unique year so making a prediction is quite difficult.’’

BRISBANE GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Brisbane Grammar School assistant director of Sport Greg Di‑Losa said the Firsts would look to play an up-tempo style this season, based on quick transitions and fast counter attacks.

“BGS prides itself on being extremely competitive with all players always looking to pass forward via a secure route as the first option so that possession is maintained and controlled,’’ Di-Losa said.

“In possession, the first option is to counter-attack through an efficient and measured passing game that allows for creativity and early penetration.

“If no counterattacking opportunities are available, play is designed to attack the opposition goal by employing a patient build-up through controlled, secure possession (a combination of short and long passes) working the ball into the final third.’’

NUDGEE COLLEGE SEASON PREVIEW

The team, to be co-captained by Edward Holmes and Alex Iacovella, would have a large slice of experience after many players gained Firsts’ experience last season.

“2020 sees a large number of players returning from gaining valuable experience in 2019,’’ Di-Losa said.

“A large number of year 12’s are extremely grateful of the opportunity to play in their final year in the unique situation that was term 2.

“The BGS 1st XI feel privilege to play and hope their performances are a reflection of this.’’

Di-Losa said players to watch included midfielder Alex Iacovella and defenders Alex Kiers and Lachlan Gorringe.

TOOWOOMBA GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Toowoomba Grammar School football head coach Chris McLeod said this season would see an almost completely new squad after a majority of last year’s players graduated.

“Henry Wells will be the cornerstone of our season as captain,’’ McLeod explained.

“He has the ability to play numerous roles on the park, backed up by a squad of boys who will all play their part in the 2020 campaign.’’

Asked about the team’s style of play, McLeod said it was based around the college’s links with Brazil through Mr Rale Rasic as patron.

“It is a style that encourages flair while maintaining adaptability and thinking on behalf of the players as the game evolves and transitions,’’ McLeod said.

“This in line with the Rasic methodology of simplicity serves best.’’

Skipper Wells will be supported by the team’s vice-captain, Jacob Bunt.

NOTE: Andrew Dawson and The Courier-Mail will cover weekend matches online from July 18.
