Iona College batsman Harley Malpass saved his side from a potential disaster in AIC First XI cricket at the weekend.
Malpass scored 75 to lift his side from 5-20 to 171 – enough runs in which to secure a winning total batting first.
It seemed all over for Iona in the first hour of play against St Laurence’s College, but Malpass batted seemingly without any pressure to rush his side forward.
He shared Player of the Round honours with Paddies’ junior Steve Hogan who scored a remarkable 128 – in a losing side.
A Sandgate-Redcliffe junior, Hogan faced just 117 balls, taking his team to a seemingly unbeatable 5-249.
But the Ryan Pembroke inspired-Padua run chase proved successful.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
1. Harry Clench
That man Harry speared St Patrick’s College forward with an opening batting effort of 70, adding 146 for the second wicket with Hogan. The week previous his left arm spinners also proved decisive, and he is a fine First XI cricketer.
2. Steve Hogan (St Patrick’s College)
Hogan’s century against Padua College was yet another ton in a summer of dreams following hundreds in club and junior representative cricket. Obviously for a Year 9 student to produce such a notable knock marks him as an out of the box talent.
3. Ryan Pembroke (Padua College)
The Padua College captain was superb, pure and simple. His team faced a daunting run chase of 250 to win, but he gestured to his team “follow me boys’’ as he stroked 80 from 83 balls. It was a high class knock from a proud skipper.
4. Harley Malpass (Iona College)
Malpass’ exploits have been well documented above. It takes a person with special temperament to first all survive St Laurence’s new ball bowling, then put his side in a winning position from a perilous position. Well done to him.
5. Billy Nuss (Marist College Ashgrove)
Nuss was a round 1 Team of the Round selection after taking six wickets with his leg spin. But the Valley junior is a batsman as well, and at the weekend he scored a delightful half century (58) as Marist posted a winning total.
6. Sam Batiste (St Peters)
It was Sam Batiste who pulled the trigger on St Peters’ dramatic up tempo first innings against St Edmund’s College, with his better than a run-a- ball knock giving his team confidence to back their batting skills. He also helped secure a run out.
7. Braithyn Pecic (Padua College)
What a performance from Pecic whose 31 not out off just 32 balls got Padua home by the skin of its teeth. Wow, what a finish, and what an effort by Pecic who produced just when it seemed all the hard work by Pembroke to get Padua within cooee of the winning total of 250 would be wasted.
8. Ben Fingland (Villanova College)
In round 1 Fingland made our Team of the Week after a five wicket haul. For round 2, he made our team for his fighting 79 that almost carried Villa to an unlikely win over Marist College Ashgrove. Villa were dead and buried, but Fingland batted magnificently with the lower order and tail to keep his team alive in the match – deep into the day.
9. Harry Sammut (St Edmund’s College)
When the opposition makes 284, yet you take 2-27 from 10 overs, you deserve the highest of praise. And so it is the case for Eddies’ Harry Sammut who bowled splendidly against the runaway St Peters Lutheran College batsmen. Then Sammut scored a half century. It was some effort.
10. Will Tozer (Padua)
Allrounder Tozer makes our team for merely scoring 13 not out. Pecic was the batting hero at the death for Padua, but would he have got Padua home in the last over had Tozer not played his part in the partnership? The answer is – highly unlikely.
11. Luke Dyer (St Peters)
What a day it was for year 11 student Luke Dyer who claimed 5-24 to quickly unravel Eddies despite brave resistance from Harry Sammut. Dyer’s performance was just what the doctor ordered. in support of his batsmen who had their best day in some time.
12. Keshavan Munsamy
Munsamy displayed great temperament in scoring his 51 from 81 balls which set up a run avalanche for St Peters in the late morning.
