AIC First XI round 1: Hogan 100, Fingland fight not enough

AIC First XI cricket: There was a century by a year 9 student and a near hundred by a Villa allrounder - but both finished losers during an extraordiary day of action.

St Patrick’s College Year 9 run machine Steven Hogan blazed a superb century in AIC First XI cricket today, but it was not enough to prevent Padua College snaring a bewildering victory.

Set 250 to win, Padua College (7-250) reached the target with three balls remaining.

Braithyn Pecic (31 not out, 32 balls) was a late order hero, but only after his captain Ryan Pembroke (80, 83 balls) had given his side a chance.

What a day it was at Curlew Park.

It was a case of Hogan’s Heroes as young Steven Hogan scored his fifth century of the season - only to see Padua run down his team’s imposing tally.

A Sandgate-Redcliffe junior, Hogan amassed 128 from just 117 balls, taking his team to the high tide mark of 5-249.

Hogan, a right hander, spent two hours putting St Patrick’s College into a seemingly unbeatable position.

ROUND 2 - TEAM OF THE WEEK

His sidekick was Harry Clench (70), with whom Hogan added 146 for the second wicket.

Hogan was in his 80s and pushing hard toward his century as St Patrick’s approached the 200 mark after 45 overs, then in the last five over a flurry of runs came off his bat.

Having scored 43 runs from the last 21 balls he faced, Hogan was last man out going hard at the bowling.

Hogan is no stranger to scoring centuries. This season in club or representative cricket he had already scored four centuries, while also passing 40 on 10 occasions.

For Padua College, Josh Nevill held firm under fire (0-37, 10 overs).

In the Padua innings, Joe Cotgreave and Pembroke were dynamic, scoring at more than a run-a-ball as Padua passed 100 in 16 overs.

Kai Hawkins then arrested momentum with the dismissal of Cotgreave (34, 25 balls) but Pembroke pushed on despite the loss of another wicket - Tom Tozer who was dismissed by Clench.

Pembroke found support from Sebastian Heselden, and at the halfway point of the innings Padua College were 4-144 - only needing 106 to win in 25 overs.

Tozer (29), a match winner last weekend, added a quick fire 62 in 40 minutes in partnership with Pembroke before he was dismissed by that man Clench, but Pembroke moved on regardless.

Pembroke scored his 70th run going at run-a-ball pace and Padua were better than even money chances requiring 82 runs from 17 overs with six wickets in the bank.

Even when Pembroke was dismissed by Braden Volker, Sebastian Heselden stepped up to the plate (47).

But Volker’s double break through winded Padua’s pursuit of victory despite needing just 55 from 10 overs.

Enter Pecic, who alongside Will Tozer (13 not out), scored the required runs in quick time.

And not far behind Steve Hogan’s effforts was Villanova College allrounder Ben Fingland (79) - batting against Marist Ashgrove.

In a thriller at Andrew Slack Oval, Marist College Ashgrove produced an even team performance to amass 8-239 - just enough to defeat Villanova (219) despite Fingland’s amazing knock.

In the Ashgrove innings every batsman reached double figures, with first round bowling hero Billy Nuss top scoring with 58.

But around Nudd, Hrstich (32), Trotter (23), Brandon (29), Russo (23) and Harten (23) did their jobs as Ashgrove were put into a commanding position of 5-178 after 40 overs. Harten’s 17-ball at the end of the innings was important and proved the difference.

Villanova did not die wondering, and with allrounder Cameron Bukowski available, Villa challenged the Ashgrove bowlers as Bukowski (33, 35 balls) and Ben Thallon (53, 54 balls) scored at run-a-ball pace.

Fingland, a match winner with the ball seven days earlier, then showed plenty with the bat and at 4-150 with 20 overs remaining, Villa were not going down without a fight.

Importantly leg-spinner Nuss followed his dismissal of Thallon by claiming Horton, but while Fingland was at the crease, the 69 required from 10 overs remained a possibility.

Ashgrove’s Ryan Harten then claimed two quick wickets and despite Fingland’s presence at the crease, Ash were back in front again with Villa 8-196.

But Fingland continued on and almost stole victory for his side.

St PetersLutheran College pair Sam Batiste (52, 49 balls) and Keshavan Munsamy (51, 81 balls) showed their class with half centuries against St Edmund’s College (167), while Aarav Pant scored a quick 46 (30 balls, eight fours) as Saints reached 8-284.

Batiste set an early standard with his innings over 59 balls which featured six fours and two sixes before Windolf bowled him.

But the platform continued to be laid by Munsamy and Harvie who had St Peters positioned at 4-177 after 39 overs.

What will please the St Peters coaching staff most is that it was such an even batting performance given the top score was 52 in a total of 284.

Hats off to Harry Sammut (2-27, 10 overs) who did splendidly at the bowling crease for Eddies.

When Eddies batted, Batiste was in the game again, combining with Curtis Beevers to snare a run out after Tom Johnston had claimed a wicket with the new ball.

Ben Naish was dangerous for St Edmunds’, gliding to 25 runs just three overs, but after he was dismissed Sammut continued with a lovely little knock.

Sammut, who scored a half century, found support from Riley Mills and St Edmund’s fight should be commended.

At Iona, the home side came from behind to beat St Laurence’s College.

In the morning session Iona mustered a more than competitive 8-171 against St Laurence’s College - after being 5-20.

But Harley Malpass (75) rescued the Iona innings and with help from the lower order, Iona produced a good score.

Iona College director of sport Keith Harron said Iona’s bowling effort was very much a team effort, but nothing could surpass the tremendous innings of Malpass which was clearly the highlight of the game.
