ROUND 2 REPORT

PLAYERS TO WATCH

AIC’S TOP 10 PLAYERS IN 2021

1. CHARLES MOORE (St Patrick’s College)

Your team is needing 100 runs in 20 overs with 10 wickets in the bank. No dramas, right?

Well not right. Throw in rain, darkness, yapping Padua fieldsman and probing bowlers and it is an environment not for the faint hearted. Moore’s 39 from 39 balls as an opener was crucial in St Patrick’s successfully running down the total.

2. BEN THALLON (Villanova)

Thallon raced to 42 not out in his team’s victory over St Peters Lutheran College. He is a Kuraby Knights junior who has been blooded in grade cricket at Wynnum Manly.

3. XAVIER SANTOS (St Laurence’s College)

Santos played the sheet anchor role to a free flowing MacKenzie Douglas as St Laurence’s College ran down Padua College to win. He faced a mini crisis, with St Laurence’s dipping to 3-27 and 4-48, but he held his nerve and never panicked.

4. TOM TOZER (Padua College)

Tozer was a star for Padua College with his 69 runs from 69 balls against St Laurence’s. Padua were around 90 runs at the halfway mark of their innings when Tozer took off at a gallop, racing his side to 175 when he was last man out. As a bowler he also took 1-27.

5. CURTIS BEEVERS (St Peters Lutheran College)

He is a class act. Beevers played well last season and he started 2022 in a hurry, scoring a classy 55 in 108 minutes at the crease. St Peters teammates need to stay with him and if they do, they will muster some very handy totals this season. Well done C Beevers.

6. MACKENZIE DOUGLAS (St Laurence’s College)

The leg-spinning all-rounder produced arguably the innings of the round and along with Xavier Santos, he overcame the loss of four early wickets to be the batting enforcer in the defeat of Padua College. Douglas raced to 53 from 49 balls.

7. BILLY NUSS (Marist College Ashgrove)

Nuss claimed 6-21 (eight overs) in a leg-spinning masterclass to nip St Edmund’s College innings in the bud. A Brisbane North representative and Valley junior, Nuss produced the bowling figures of the round.

8. THOMAS RIECK (Villanova College)

Rieck disrupted St Peters early with two quick wickets when he took the new ball - including the prized scalp of the St Peters captain Sam Batiste

9. LACHLAN POTTER (St Laurence’s College)

The Holland Park and South Brisbane junior bruised Padua’s top order by claiming both openers, giving his team a flystart in the match. Around his performance, Darcy Rowan (2-30) and young veteran Callum Reidy (1-28) also shone in an all-encompassing team bowling performance.

10. BEN FINGLAND (Villanova College)

Big paceman Fingland burst out of the blocks to take 5-17 in his team’s win over St Peters. He was a key player in Villa’s successful campaign last year and so it will be the case again in 2022 - although Fingland had plenty of mates helping him, including Liam McConville (2-14) and Thomas Rieck (2-15).

11. MARLON PETERS (St Laurence’s College)

St Laurence’s College recovery to defeat Padua College can be traced back to Laurie’s bowling effort which dismissed their rivals in the 45th over. And front and centre was Marlon Peters (4-25, eight overs) who dismissed Padua’s premier players - Cotgreave, Pembroke and Tozer - along the way.

12. JOE COTGREAVE (Padua College)

Cotgreave had a good day for Padua, scoring a fluent 47 (62 balls, 87 minutes) and claiming a run out during St Laurence’s run chase. His innings gave Padua early momentum after losing both openers.
