Coach Palmucci said the five under 15 girls, Penny Stringer, Ari Sampson Jones, Jamie Collins, Taleah Palmucci and Luca Jensen, all contributed to the win.

Broadbeach coach James Dofter described his team’s performance as “very solid’’ given a lot of the starting side was not available.

“The girls’ performance was as good as we could have offered, including from our under 15 girls that stepped up in such a big game for us.

“Our backline was particularly strong.’’

Burleigh vs Southport

Southport co-coach Marcus Gaszik said after last week’s effort, and considering they were playing a period of the season against the top three teams, the young Sharks could easily have thrown in the towel.

“But our girls have amazing spirit,’’ he praised.

“We took it to Burleigh in the first half but ran out of legs in the second half.’’

Surfers Paradise v Yeronga

The Yeronga girls ended up with only 13 players available but displayed a great fighting spirit.

“There were some awesome passages from our girls. however Surfers Paradise’s transition and running game proved too strong,’’ said Yeronga coach Jessie Baltus.

“The game was played in good spirits and our girls had an enjoyable game. All left the field with a smile on their face.’’

Maroochydore v Wilston Grange

Maroochydore coach Aaron Yates said his side started much stronger this week. “Finally our first quarter was a really good team effort,’’ Yates said.

“But there were patches throughout the second and third quarters when we weren’t switched on.

“However, the last 10 minutes for us was really good.’’

Wilston Grange coach Jamie Sceney said they had the game on their terms for large periods, but could not make the most of those opportunities.

“While the finals are starting to slip from our grasp, we will continue to work hard on the training track and see if we can get a couple of results in the last two games.’’

Sandgate v Coorparoo

Hawks coach Shane Watterson said his side finally had a lot to sing about after a gripping two goal win over Cooparoo.

“Coorparoo won the second half battle and pushed us to the end,’’ said a relieved Watterson.

Roos coach Scott Harrison said it was a very physical game. “We knew they would bring it (a strong game) so our goal was to match it and try to attack from the contest.

“Sandgate kicked two early goals but Coorparoo worked hard to get back into the game.

“After halftime we were able to start winning more of the ball and more importantly keep them goalless.

“We then had opportunities to get even on the scoreboard but just couldn’t covert when needed,’’ Harrison explained.

“It was a great team effort with five of our normal midfield unavailable. The girls really stepped up.’’

In DIVISION 2 action, it was an exciting day at Tweed Coast Tigerland against a fast improving, well connected Gravatt/ Jindalee side. Tweed Coast won 29-17.

Both Teams bought big energy, skill and connection that made for an irresistible and fast moving match that ebbed and flowed.

With a hot start, the Mt Gravatt girls busted out from the blocks with strong and slick ball handling from stoppages to have our Tigers girls under pressure.

“But our back line held out strong and repelled with discipline and precision and we were able to hold out and punch through for the first goal,’’ said Tweed Coast coach Steve Foreman.

The contested possession count was evenly shared with great tackle pressure right across the ground, and it was the Tigers ruck ascendency that had Tweed pressing hard.

“Ruck Billie Hutton fed our fast and furious roving pack of Allannah McNally, Heidi Grimster and Summer Browning,’’ Foreman said.

“The depth and quality of our U15s girls coming through really is lifting the bar and giving us forward momentum to finals and into next season.’’

For the Mt Gravatt-Jindalee Mags goals were kicked by Taya Weston and Taneka Dhadlie.

Coach Damien King said the Mags started strongly but didn’t capitalise enough on their opportunities in forward 50 in the first half, kicking five behinds.

“The third quarter saw us really turn the pressure up and we controlled the majority of the questeruntil Taya kicked her first ever goal.

“The last quarter, we were coming home with a wet sail thanks to another goal of the year contender from Taneka.

“Unfortunately that’s where it ended as one of the Tigers girls was in a bad way and needed an ambulance. We wish her well for a speedy recovery.’’

Morningside fought hard for a 16 point win over Kenmore in what was probably the highest quality game coach Alan McGrath had observed this season.

“Both teams played a similar run and gun style, so the game was played at a pace that surprisingly didn’t wane as players fatigued,’’ he said.

“The result could have gone either way but Morningside got over the line in what will surely be a valuable finals rehearsal.

“A true team performance with all lines performing fantastically, with a real commitment to every contest, so I won’t single out any players.’’
