QAFL colts: Who were the most improved players across the competition this season? All is revealed here as we close in on the finals.

Broadbeach won a dress rehearsal for the finals against Sherwood while Wilston Grange went on their winning way in round 18 of the QAFL colts competition.

While most clubs were having a bye, the Cats and Magpies engaged in a fabulous round game which saw Sherwood surge with three goals in the final term to get within 11 points of Broadbeach.

This was after Broadbeach escaped to a 7-4 to 2-4 halftime lead.

“It was a game of two halves. We had a good first half but left the door open and you can’t do that against quality opposition,’’ said Broadbeach coach Lewis Chiodo.

And the Gorillas’ pushed on toward the finals with a 17-8 to 2-7 win over Redland Victoria Point.

Mt Gravatt - Luke Kirkman

He had developed into a really important cog in the side, said coach David Greenaway.

“He can play anywhere on the field. He went down back in our close win against Morningside recently and held his down against a bigger opponent.’’

Morningside - Matt Robson

He has really changed his game from under 17s to colts, according to his coach Ross Anderson. “He reads the game well and his decision making and skill execution is outstanding.’’

Surfers Paradise - Jordan Williams

Williams has found some great form and is playing great team footy, praised his coach Alistair Mitchell.

Noosa - Sam Cassidy

Cassidy came across when Noosa had no players and has stayed the course, proving his toughness one-on-one across the season. “He is very reliable and his skills were improving each week,’’ said his coach Jed Costegan.

Labrador - Leo Johnston

A midfielder, Johnson is an absolute workhorse and finds himself in almost every contest. “He has improved every week and is only 16,’’ coach Rob Yoannidis said.

Sherwood - Alex Peacock

Still eligible for the under 17s in 2022, he impressed when playing up last season. “The this season he exploded to be the best wing in the competition, averaging two goals a game while also having an insane work rate,’’ said coach Ben Jaenke-Cain

Redland-Victoria Point - Max Boultbee

Before this season, the young forward last played in the under 14s. A tall player who has a solid mark, he loves kicking a goal when the opportunity arises.

“He is continuing to develop all parts of his game and is getting better and better with every game he plays,’’ said his coach Brian Zutt.

Wilston Grange - Ryan Lewis

He has emerged from being a back flanker in 2022 to become an outstanding midfielder. Lewis worked hard on his fitness during the off-season and according to coach Darren Fazeldeen has “really dominated in there this year with his workrate and winning of the one-on-one battles’’.

Broadbeach - Cooper Wilkinson

Cats coach Lewis Chiodo said Wilkinson had been “reliable and dependable and a true old fashioned utility’’.

Palm Beach Currumbin - Beau Lester Sutherland, Cameron Brown and Tom Grimster

Sutherland has put on size this season and become a real bull in the midfield, while utility player Brown is a player coach Glen Clark can put anywhere.

Rookie Grimster is an under 17 age player who continues to get better in the midfield.
