The SEQ AFL under 17 girls footy is roaring toward the finals, with the Sherwood Magpies soaring to a strong win, the Burleigh Bombers unloading and the Roos skipping to victory.

And there was a 100 game appearance for Sandgate’s Emmerson Brady who “gave it everything’’ in her milestone match while five 15-year-olds rallied to help Tweed Coolangatta to strong win.

Sherwood’s western suburbs neighbours Wests Juniors also had a win running away from Southport, while Broadbeach flexed its defensive muscle against the Gorillas. More on those matches later.

But first at Sherwood where the Magpies defeated Maroochydore in an Oakman Park ambush, winning 3-5-23 to 1-28 and unleashing a consistent effort against quality opponents.

“After a couple of losses, it is a confidence builder,’’ said Sherwood coach Chris Bloor.

“It was a good team performance against a top team.’’

Leading the charge was Daisy Minz who repelled possession from centre half back, Gabby Banks (wing) and Annabel Peacock who shone in the midfield and forward.

Roos coach Aaron Yates heaped praise on his rivals Sherwood, but expressed frustration at his team’s continuing inconsistency.

“We are just too inconsistent,’’ he said.

While he did not get an official BoG following the loss, he did have high praise for his ruck

Zali Bubb ruck who “tried hard all day’’.

At Giffin Park, Coorparoo defeated Yeronga 3.8.26 beat Yeronga 1.2.8 in a close match which featured a strong team effort from the Roos.

Abby Rammage, Lyla Harrison, Sophie Kalan and Eve Kirkwood were at the forefront for the home side.

At the back, Rammage excelled in the wide channels while Kirkwood and Harrison were gallant in the midfield. Kalan, a forward, had sure hands as well.

Yeronga’s effort could not be questioned and they had plenty of good players.

Lila Streeter at centre was noteworthy for her clearance kicking which was excellent while Sienna Morassuti’s running and ability to get the hard ball while in full flight was impressive.

Isabella Wheeler produced a season best game, with her attack on the ball from defence was something to behold while Sophie Dunne, like Streeter, worked tirelessly for hard ball.

The headgeared Kaitlyn Smith stood tall in the backline for Yeronga, making a handful of great marks to relieve pressure.

At Sandgate, the Hawks tried hard against Burleigh and the nine goal margin did not reflect their endeavour, but the class of the Bombers came to the fore.

“Our tackling pressure was really good, but the skills of Burleigh, peeling out and making space and running and be that link up player,’’ said Sandgate coach Shane Watterson.

Burleigh’s coaching staff agreed their side were excellent in those facets, but they did emphasis that Sandgate’s tackling provided good practice for the side as it heads toward the finals.

“The way their tackling pressure was, that was fantastic,’’ praised Burleigh coach Em Otto.

Best for Burleigh were Karissa Muir and Abby Carroll in the backline who offered reliability in keeping defence up and shutting down the attacking pressure.

Burleigh’s Summer Simmonds was strong in getting head over the football and bringing the pressure while Kawani Aboody did plenty of unrewarded running, gut efforts and supporting teammates from the wing.

Alannah Welsh also impressed the opposition coach Watterson.

Watterson said the Hawks had plenty of triers, including Amy Sharp at fullback who confronted quality talls.

But Montannah Fabian and Brady in her milestone match were best.

Watterson said his team’s goal was now to snare a finals’ berth and play in a decider.

Wests Juniors had a 74-6 win over Southport Sharks, turning the tables on the result from a couple of rounds earlier.

“It was another very even performance with lots of drive forward from Maddie Pfitzner, Charlotte Russell and Eva Sartor, and solid defence led by Sammy Snowden.

Lucy Denholm and Edie McCabe also provided targets up forward for Wests, while Stevie Fisher was strong in the ruck and Bailey Cooke was always a presence on the wing.

The Southport Sharks’ best players were Jordan Donnelly, Shyla Bauer and Amelia Smith.

In Coolangatta, the Blues claimed a classy 71-13 win over the Wilston Grange Gorillas.

The Gorillas started well with the scores locked at quarter time, but with the wind against them in the second, the visitors lost their shape and began to concede goals.

“We continued to battle it out until the end despite a few injuries,” Gorillas coach Jamie Sceney said.

“I can’t fault the effort of the girls.”

Tayla Simpson, Issy Levine and Mia Schipper were tireless, with Schipper having her best defensive game yet.

In the Tweed Coolangatta Blues v Wilston Grange Gorillas clash, the Blues had one of those days where everything clicked, running out winners 71-13.

“Some days everything just clicks and today it did,’’ said Tweed Cooly coach Dave Palmucci.

“Wilston Grange bought really good heat and pressure on the ball early and it was a tight contested even first quarter.

“But the second quarter saw us get out of congestion with really good burst and chain of handball and we were able to get the ball open into space and use it going forward.

“The pressure stayed on into the second half and it was great game being played.’’

Palmucci said his defence stood tall and repelled plenty of their attacks.

“Eventually we were rewarded for our efforts with some sublime use out of the middle and our forwards creating space and taking their chances, finishing the game with a win.

Nakeisha Drew-Perkiss, Eva White and Jorja Evans as usual were rocks in defence for the winners, while the midfield was led by Aleah Stringer, Evie Emmett, Izzy Boucher and Lunna Elkerton.

The awesome foursome were instrumental in getting the ball forward and winning at contest. Wingers Lily Alford and Asha Hynes ran all day as usualamd two forwards Allira Palmucci and Ava Maher gave Tweed Cooly great targets. “They were supported brilliantly at ground level’’.

He said a special mention to “our five under 15s for helping out and contributing to great win’’.

They were Taleah Palmucci, Penny Stringer, Luca Jensen, Hailey Flynn and Jamie Collins.

On the Gold Coast, the Broadbeach Cats had a 30-3 win over Victoria Point Sharks in the late game, with Annabelle Foat strong in the middle and Hallie Cunnginham “very hard to beat in defence’’.

“It was a great team game by our girls,’’ said Cats coach James Dofter.

He said the group brought into what they were trying to achieve against the Gorillas and produced a very competitive defensive game.

Dofter said the team’s connection work also started to show positive signs.

In Div 2 action, the Vultures enjoyed playing at exceptional Redcliffe facilities and also the great spirit the game was played in.

“I cannot praise the attitude of the Redcliffe girls high enough, after a well fought out game their welcoming attitude is something their club and coaches should be proud of,’’ said Vultures coach Damien King.

Redcliffe won 4-8-32 to 1-4-10, with a last quarter defensive effort by Vultures not enough to prevent Redcliffe from winning after they kicked two goals in the second quarter and one in the third.

“Our only goal came from an amazing play from Tankeka Dhadlie who picked the ball up from about 50m out and ran and bounced through half of Redcliffe’s backline before slotting the goal from right in front,’’ King said.

“Jessica Williams was at her usual best collecting possessions at will all over the field.

“We are so lucky to have Jessica Hendry patrolling our backline.

“Her leadership both by what she does on the field and verbally in team meetings is elite.

“I was also impressed with Tahlia Butchers progress as a forward and Jordyn Dornhart starting to believe in herself around congestion.’’

Best: Taneka Dhadlie, Jessica Williams and Jessica Hendry.

At Yeronga, Tweed Heads Northern Rivers had a 9-6-60 3-2-20 win over Noosa Tigers.

“The signs are all positive for our exciting Northern Rivers team, with only a few rounds of the home and away season to play,’’ said coach Steve Foreman.

“The girls are really well connected and playing with great skill and confidence.’’

He said Tweed Coast NR Tigers girls were locked in a great challenge against Noosa.

“The game was an important stage for a number of our girls returning from injury and U15s on our talent acceleration program,’’ Foreman said.

“The Noosa girls were really focused from the start and the match was always going to be a classic Tiger clash.

“From the start our ruck and clearance guns were firing with ruck Billi Hutton and Ash Rettenmaier power drives and deft touches to our on-ballers,’’ Foreman said.

“Our pre-match focus was really on maximising stoppage play to wide and effective running options.

“Once again Allannah McNally provided a dynamo performance in the centre with clever and committed attacking play.

“Outstanding running and overlap play from Ari Brown, Heidi Grimster, Madi Power and Wren Hynes had our repeat forward entries rolling and solid scoring pressure on the Noosa defence.

“Dana Ward, Laini Mostert, Erin Lanyon, Bonnie Starling and Ava Dixon combined with exciting finishing work on goal.’’

Foreman did give high praise to the Noosa girls who were “fast and skillful with awesome rebound play from centre half back’’.

“Their transition through mid field was fast and high class and challenged our centre line and wingers.
