MARYMOUNT COLLEGE V COOMBABAH SHS

YEAR 11/12 DIVISION 1

MARYMOUNT has held off an ill-disciplined Coombabah to record a 30-4 Titans Schools League win in a sloppy affair at Nerang on Wednesday night.

Marymount rake Follett was the star architect in the first half, setting up the first with a misdirect at the line to send Browning over under the posts, before going himself from dummy half on the next attacking foray – beating the defence back to the line for an easy try.

Built big through the middle with speedy outside backs, both sides tried – and failed – to throw the ball around in the first half, leading to plenty of dropped ball and turnovers.

Coombabah lost bench back-rower Matt Logopati to the sin bin a minute before halftime but it was with 12 men that they crossed for first points in the second half, through winger Travis Tawa-Graves.

The game opened up from there, with Marymount answering quickly under the posts to extend the lead back out to 14 points, before Coombabah prop Quezon Eteru became the second man sent to the bin for a dangerous tackle.

This time Marymount immediately took advantage, with the winger Robertson sprinting through the gap in the line left by Eteru in the ensuing play to dive under the posts and put the match all-but beyond doubt.

Playing out the remainder of the match with 12 men Coombabah didn’t help matters with repeated simple errors early in the set.

Smelling blood, Marymount pushed for one final try and found it through the lock, Harris, sealing a deserved 26-point win.

MARYMOUNT COLLEGE V MEN OF BUSINESS

YEAR 11/12 DIVISION 2

A STUNNING solo effort from Marymount centre Jacob Brown has sealed a 28-12 victory over Men of Business in the Titans School League at Nerang.

After a first half dominated by Marymount’s forwards, with Brown’s boot converting their good work, it was the centre’s turn to play provider with a darting run from deep within his own half that set up a Ben Radler try.

Marymount led 10-0 at halftime through tries to prop Talas Abell and second-rower Nick Smith, as Men of Business struggled to get anything going in attack.

But the boys in stripes were the first to cross in the second half, with fullback Charlie Broome capping a great overlap play to the right corner.

Second-rower Jai Rollason’s crashing run to the line soon after stifled any Men of Business momentum, before Brown’s run to set up Radler extended Marymount’s lead out to 18 points.

Refusing to lay down, Men of Business hit back with two quick tries to Milani Sisatoa and Jackson Turner – breathing life into their supporters at the clubhouse end.

But that momentum was stifled on the stroke of the full-time whistle when Rollason, with an almost identical run to his first, stepped around the defence to crash over beside the posts for his second – sealing the 16-point win.

Marymount 28 (T. Abell, N. Smith, J. Rollason 2, B. Radler tries; J. Brown 4/5 goals) def. Men of Business 12 (C. Broome, M. Sisatoa, J. Turner tries; W. Takahi 0/3 goals) at Nerang Roosters Field 1

MARYMOUNT COLLEGE V COOMBABAH STATE HIGH SCHOOL

YEAR 9/10 DIVISION 1

A RESURGENT Coombabah State High School has overturned momentum and a second-half deficit to defeat Marymount College 20-12 in the Titans Schools League Year 9/10 Division 1 Boys at Nerang.

Coombabah burst out of the blocks and immediately put Marymount under pressure – their second entry inside the 10 securing first points through crafty halfback Hunter Wilson.

They were over again mere minutes later when winger Ken Tiomai squirmed his way between legs from dummy half at the left corner post.

Coombabah looked poised for a runaway victory at that point – enter Josh Trowbridge.

Marymount’s deceptively quick centre decided he’d had enough and put the school on his back with tries either side of halftime to give Marymount an unlikely 12-10 lead midway through the second-half.

Trowbridge’s first came off a great cross-field shifting play from Marymount to find the centre on the left edge.

After the break – and with momentum on their side – Marymount struck again through Trowbridge, this time a scything run from midfield to outpace his defender to the corner post.

A second conversion from the touchline from five-eighth Jimi Pedlow lifted Marymount to a 12-10 lead.

That seemed to spur Coombabah into life however and, minutes later, electric fullback Reilly Piezas final broke free for the run he had threatened all evening, running away under the posts to restore the lead.

When Ryan Matthews waltzed over not long after off an outnumber to the right, Coombabah had restored its two-score ascendancy.

Coombabah 20 (H. Wilson, K. Tiomai, R. Piezas, R. Matthews tries; C. McCallum 2/4 goals) def. Marymount 12 (J. Trowbridge 2 tries; J. Pedlow 2/2 goals) at Nerang Roosters Field 1

MABEL PARK SHS v MARSDEN SHS

Year 7-8 Div 1

Marsden SHS fullback Janique Mili did everything but fill the halftime water bottles of their teammates after a stunning contribution to her team’s Titans Schools League victory this afternoon.

Marsden defeated Mabel Park 20-nil in the year 7-8 Div clash, with Mili again stamping herself as a special talent – with and without the ball.

A sizzling 65m solo try, where she angled her way through the Mabel Park defence before going into overdrive and scorching her way to score, was the highlight of the game.

More remarkable was that the try came just a minute before she produced two tackles on opponents much bigger than her.

She dragged down Latai Vili and Sheteyan Han successive tackles, then dug into her reserves of energy to swoop seconds later for her runaway try after a turnover.

Mili also kicked a goal, chased her halves kicks for territory and mopped up at the back when Mabel Park had breached the front line. Then late in the second half she scored again. What a performance.

With Mili at fullback, Lilli Lewis at five-eight, Kaelyn Passi a link and dummy half Grace Fangupou clever at the ruck, it made for a successful day for Marsden SHS. Mabel Park had their moments and the scoreline did not reflect the competitiveness of the opposition.

Mabel Park were tough carrying the ball and in defence, and it took a very good side to dismantle them. There was a try-saving tackle early when Mabel winger Chyal Pulewalsch came in off her wing to prevent Marsden SHS centre Namoe Gesa from scoring.

Mabel Park SHS forwards Meie Misa Nameie and Rangimaria Hurae troubled Marsden early, but it was Marsden who scored first through No. 13 Dakota Brady Heaslop.

A kick ahead saw Mili use her spread to pressure the opposition, resulting in Mili scooping up the ball and passing to the supporting Brady Heaslop.

Mabel Park SHS’s forward power game was challenging, and the team was almost rewarded when Tupoutua King was stopped just short of the line.

Marsden SHS looked slightly more dangerous with the ball as dummy half Grace Fangupou and five-eight Lilli Lewis handled the ball creatively, but the Mabel Park fullback Tiahna Kanawi was threatening.

MARSDEN SHS V MABEL PARK SHS

Year 9-10

Malaela Su’a spearheaded Mabel Park SHS to a 28-nil victory in the year 9-10 Div 1 clash this afternoon.

Playing lock, Su’a led by example with a high work rate they must surely have inspired her teammates.

It was an outstanding team performance by Mabel Park, but the seasoned Su’a led the way.

Her effort was garnished by a first half try, and then an offload early in the second half when she popped a ball a pass to a supporting hooker Kaylani Tavita who delivered a ball for halfback Athena Vili to score.

Centre Carleigh Pio also benefited from the crisp teamwork of her teammates, twice scoring in the first half.

After her forwards had stretched the Marsden defence, replacement outside back Angel Austin also enjoyed striding over.

One of the tries of the afternoon came when Mabel Park No. 6 Danielle Tutakanganua directed a perfect chip kick across the face of the defence and into the corner where Dreya Seumanutafa stretched to snare possession and score.

Marsden tried hard all afternoon. Forwards Takai, Samson, Wills, Manahi and Francis put it to their opponents, and behind them five-eigth Indo Seeto looked likely.

But the Mabel Park defence was simply too good and Marsden just could not find a way past it.

MARSDEN SHS v MABEL PARK

Year 11-12

Marsden SHS’s Year 11-12 advanced its Titans Schools League premiership credentials with a local derby win 18-8 over Mabel Park SHS tonight.

Marsden were as crisp as the evening night air, displaying no chinks in the armour despite a willing Mabel Park working its engines overtime.

Coached by NRL veteran Jamie Feeney, this Marsden side looked a well-oiled machine, testing their rivals with inside and outside passes and quick play-the-balls.

In defence Marsden SHS challenged Mabel Park at the ruck and it was a comprehensive performance.

Mabel Park deservedly scored the last two tries of the game – courtesy of Malaela Su’a who had backed up from playing a leading role in Mabel’s year 9-10 win.

Indeed so gutsy were Mabel Park, that the side kept Marsden scoreless in the second half.

But this was a very good Marsden SHS team performance.

From the front row of Trinity Ve’etutu, Kiri Quader and Mackenzie Baty, across to centres Jadeynn Leger and Rialey Baty, Marsden SHS were power packed.

Mabel Park were brave – my word they were. The forwards confronted their imposing rivals time and again, standing courageously in front of them throughout.

But Marsden’s defence just could not be breached.

Three tries in quick succession broke the game open after an even start.

Left centre Rialey Baty, with an explosive burst down the left hand touchline, scored first.

A renowned weightlifter, Bary’s leg speed carried her across the lush surface to give Marsden the first score of the match.

Then, minutes later, off the pack of a powerful charge by Baty’s sister Mackenzie, a right shift by skilful prop Trinity Ve’etutu saw centre Jaedynn Leger beat her opponent on the outside and race away for a wonderful 30m try.

Soon after Marsden’s Patricia Wani soccered a grubber kick ahead then showed nice handling skills to pick the ball up and score. The score was 14-nil approached halftime.

There were two early try saving tackles produced by Mabel Park SHS, one when the opposing fullbacks came together as Marsden’s Atlanta Peters tried to escape Jemi Chow.

Then Malaela Su’a came crashing across in cover defence after Marsden’s long striding Kailani Samson had threatened to score.
