St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace prepare for 2020 GPS First XV rugby season

St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace will lap up playing four of its seven premiership matches at home as the side bases its GPS First XV premiership assault around hard work, early ball to the backs, and more hard work.

Terrace The Brave plan to be every bit just that when the famous Red and Black confront traditional rivals St Joseph’s Nudgee College in the GPS premiership opener at Tennyson on Saturday.

The St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace rugby community has been enjoying somewwhat of a rugby revival for the last five years, and this season should be no different as the side prepares to play four of its seven premiership matches at Tennyson.

And the first of the season will be against traditional rivals Nudgee College, a contest that dates back to 1891.

“Head coach Ryan Schultz expects to be competitive and is quietly confident of surprising the favourites such as TSS and Nudgee College,’’ said director of rugby Tyron Mandrusiak.

When Mandrusiak casts his eyes over the First XV squad, he does not see any super stars, rather a “good group of kids who are working hard’’.

And that is just the way Terrace like it.

“From the under 11 black team through to the First XV, the College works hard to ensure all teams enter our round 1 clash against Nudgee College well prepared,’’ said Mandrusiak.

“The college will look to play an attacking, ball in hand style of rugby under pinned by a solid foundation of core skills.’’

To the fore will be halfback and captain Henry Davis, sparkling outside back David Vaihu and grunt men Marly Bitungane and Fergus Nasser.

“The team has six players with First XV experience from last year and will be guided around the field by No. 9 Henry Davis,’’ said Mandrusiak who, as a former Reds and premiership winning fly-half, knows the importance of having a good halfback.

“The boys are a hard working group from 1 to 15.

“Promising outside back David Vaihu is key to the team’s performance and will be looking for early ball from hard working forwards including Marly Bitungane and Fergus Nasser.’’
