GPS First XV rugby 2020: Consistency the key for Brisbane Grammar School

In the countdown to the start of the No.1 schoolboy rugby union competition in Australia, the GPS competition, we look at the mighty Brisbane Grammar School and how its First XV is shaping for 2020.

Consistency will be the key to Brisbane Grammar School as the Phil Mooney-coached First XV looks to hold its own in the week to week slog of the prestigious GPS First XV rugby competition.

BGS will open its season with a home match against Brisbane Boys College on August 8 after a trial game on August 1 against Ipswich Grammar School.

Mooney, the former Queensland Reds coach, said 2020 would be about consistency.

“Last year we were very inconsistent,’’ Mooney reflected.

“We are aiming to compete in every match this year. It will take a collective effort from our whole squad.’’

Leading the way will be captain Will Hay, one of six players returning from last year’s First XV campaign.

“He is also school captain and is a very impressive young man,’’ Mooney said.

“We have six boys returning from last year’s First XV and in this competition, older experienced boys are valuable.

“That core of boys who played Firsts in 2019 – they will need to lead from the front.’’

But Mooney stressed BGS would need a “collective effort’’ from all players in 2020.

“We are aiming to play a tactically smart game style and need to compete for every minute of every match,’’ he said.

It is a college steeped in rugby tradition, with Greg Martin, Julian Gardner, David Nucifora, Bill Ross, Cameron Lillicrap and Andy McIntyre among its old boy Wallabies.
