Wild Fox Cafe among new businesses joining Wynnum CBD precinct

For lease signs are being thrown out and switched for fancy new shopfronts as retailers move into a bayside suburb experiencing its biggest ever transformation.

The ‘for lease’ signs are being thrown out for fancy shopfronts as new retailers rush to join a growing shopping precinct on Brisbane’s bayside.

A flashy, new bubble tea and banh mi (Vietnamese Bread Roll) Shop, The Wild Fox Cafe, is the latest business to throw open their doors in the Wynnum CBD area as the suburb continues its biggest revamp in history.

Kevin Stewart from Lamonds Real Estate said he and another agent had more than 16 spaces in the area, which are quickly being snapped up as business owners witness the rise of the previously rundown waterfront suburb.

“With unit complexes, high-rise apartments, the new cinemas almost complete and the amount of other development going on in Wynnum, people are realising this is the area to be going forward,” he said.

“The biggest trend is that all the businesses wanting to come are entertainment venues such as cafes, restaurants, breweries.

“The cinema development is a huge reason behind this and I think you’ll see this Wynnum Central area become an entertainment precinct that will be better than Oxford St at Bulimba ever was.

“It might take two or three years but when it gets there, it’ll be special.”

The Wild Fox Cafe was launched earlier this month on Bay Tce by Qu Starling, a former Sydney-based artist, who thought Wynnum was the perfect place for his unique idea.

“The space I m in used to be a hairdresser, I saw the size of the space and saw it as a possibility as a arts gallery,” Mr Starling said.

“But because it’s down an alley way, there’s not a lot of foot traffic I decided to make it a cafe to bring people in.”

Mr Starling spent three months renovating the space to allow his artwork to be displayed on the walls.

“I m a former barista in North Sydney so my skills are transferable,” he said.

“I decided to bring all the things I like in my life, that is why we are having the only bubble tea shop in Wynnum as well as Banh Mi.

“I try to create new favours in bubble tea such as a pina colada and chai tea, so it’s different from other bubble tea shop.

“Along the alley way I painted all the mural leading to the shop.

“It’s a great place to have a lunch date away from traffic and tucked down an alley as well as to support local artists and businesses.”

Mr Stewart and Ben Wood have recently been put in charge of leasing out spaces at a building on the popular Florence St, Wynnum.

Some spaces have already been leased at 96-100 Florence St with the agents expecting more restaurants as well as offices and medical services.

Councillor for Wynnum Manly Peter Cumming (ALP) said he would love the area to be filled with new cafes and restaurants.

He said he believed new businesses, such as The Wild Fox Cafe, opening in Wynnum to accompany the new cinema would make the area a destination for people to visit.
