The Fat Duck and Mr Hibachi among new venues coming to rising Wynnum precinct

A previously quiet and rundown strip on Brisbane’s bayside could rival some of the city’s most popular areas as its revitalisation continues with the announcement of a stylish new wine and tapas bar alongside a Japanese fusion restaurant.

A revamped retail precinct on Brisbane’s bayside will welcome in a flashy new wine and tapas bar.

And a Japanese fusion restaurant will also be part of the mix as a previously rundown strip’s transformation continues.

The two venues will be the latest additions to the Wynnum Health Hub, which is owned by Berrima Develop Pty Ltd, the company behind the nearby Wynnum Cinema development, which has spent more than $13 million to revamp the former IGA Centre.

They will replace Bay Tce Seafood and Sushi, which closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Fat Duck, a tapas and wine bar with street dining and drinking along the popular Bay Tce, will sit on the bottom floor of the location while Mr Hibachi, an Australian and Japanese fusion restaurant, will open on the upstairs level of the building.

Mr Hibachi will also feature an espresso bar.

Both are scheduled to open before Christmas.

The new businesses build on Wynnum’s recent transformation following the construction of the Wynnum Cinema tower as well as several other major residential developments and other entertainment venues coming to the area.

Olga Faataape, who runs Fun Fit Play in the Wynnum Health Hub but will also manage both new venues, said she believed the new restaurant and wine and tapas bar would help the rising suburb emulate what Bulimba’s Oxford St was like during its peak.

“That’s what it reminds me of, except over a bit of time, it will probably be better because it’s on the bayside, near the water, which people love,” she said.

“I really think this area is going to be amazing in a bit of time and I think the cinema was the catalyst for it all.

“Now people know things are happening here and want to come or even move here.”

Mrs Faataape said The Fat Duck and Mr Hibachi were venues, which have never been seen before on the bayside.

“Thriving will definitely be a bit of a flashy bar type of feel and we will have dining and drinking along the street on Bay Tce which will make it a special experience for customers,” she said.

“Hibachi will be a nice, sit-down restaurant, where parents, who drop their kids off at Fun Fit Play next, as well as others can come in and enjoy a nice meal.”

More food and drink venues are expected to join the long list of businesses moving into the bayside in coming months.
