Longstanding Woolloongabba business, Scott Metals, to make way for 352-unit development

A family-owned Brisbane business, opened 55 years ago, will make way for a 352-unit residential project as a big name Australian developer continues its investment into an inner-city suburb.

Queensland's housing crisis

A family-owned business whose involvement in Brisbane’s inner-south stretches back to the 1960s will make way for a mega, two-tower residential development in a suburb which will be at the centre of the 2032 Olympic Games.

Big-name developers, Sarazin, are in the process of finalising their proposal with the Brisbane City Council for a luxury apartment complex, featuring more than 300 units, at 6-8 Wellington Rd at Woolloongabba after modifications were requested to the application.

The project includes two 20-storey towers with retail tenancies on the ground floor of each building with a rooftop pool deck also on both towers.

Sarazin’s managing director Darren Dougan said several changes have been made to the proposal, including reducing the amount of units from 368 to 352.

Mr Dougan said they hoped to have approval from council by the end of the year.

He also confirmed local business Scott Metals, which has been part of the Woolloongabba community for 55 years, will make way for the development once construction started.

Scott Metals, a steel merchandise supplier, was established by husband and wife team Maurice and Myra Scott in 1967 and has been handed down in the family since.

It is believed the business will relocate by Mr Dougan confirmed Scott Metals would not be going anywhere for at least 18 months.

When ‘Nuage’ comes together, Mr Dougan said he believed it would be a massive addition for Woolloongabba ahead of Brisbane becoming the focus of the sporting world in 2032.

“We aim to provide high quality, well designed affordable units with world best practice amenities for residents, while improving community infrastructure and services,” he said.

“Our vibrant retail offerings contribute to placemaking at the Gabba precinct, building on its global focus. Nuage and Silk Lane will both add to the revitalisation of Woolloongabba, creating a new paradigm where people can live, work and play”.

He also said it would be a boost for the city, which is currently enduring a housing and rental crisis.

Nuage will be Sarazin’s second major investment in the suburb after Silk Lane on Trafalgar St, where one building is already complete and two more towers are yet to be constructed.
