The derelict site of a former Sizzler restaurant at one of Brisbane’s major shopping centres is finally set for a redevelopment after sitting unused for more than three years.
A development application has been lodged to the Brisbane City Council from the Scentre Group, the operators of Westfield Carindale, to turn the former iconic all-you-can-eat restaurant into a dog daycare and training facility.
The application, which is currently being assessed by council, was submitted on December 22 last year.
Councillor for Chandler, Ryan Murphy (LNP), said the community had been waiting to hear what the future of the site would hold for some time.
“Everyone says they want the Sizzler back but the ship has sailed on that,” he said.
“The problem was, everyone loved the idea of being able to go to Sizzler, but they’d only go like once a year for the memes, it wasn’t sustainable.”
While progress could finally be coming to the site, if the development is approved, a pet facility was not what the local community had in mind with the popular options being a pub or restaurant.
“Recently residents have been asking for that corner to be redeveloped into cafes or a beer garden, something a little bit more welcoming than the car park,” Cr Murphy said.
“I’m not sure a doggy daycare is what people had in mind, but it goes to show you the booming market for pet services in Brisbane’s east.
“People are splashing out on their pets like never before, so it’s not surprising there is a need out there.
“Council will continue to assess the application; no decision has been made at this time.”
No progress has been made with the derelict former Hungry Jack’s building next to Sizzler.
