A 66-year-old man who died in a horror crash on Brisbane southside at the height of the wild weather which battered southeast Queensland over the past few days has been identified as long-term railway employee Darryl Haylock.
About 9.45am on Monday morning, Mr Haylock was travelling northbound on Jackson Rd approaching Beenleigh Rd when his car veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided with two other vehicles, including a truck with semi-trailer.
A police source told the Southern Star it’s believed Mr Haylock suffered a “medical episode” which caused him to lose control of his vehicle.
It’s understood Mr Haylock leaves behind a son and grandson, among other extended family members.
According to Mr Haylock’s LinkedIn profile, he had been working the past six years as a distribution co-ordinator for equipment hire for rail freight operator Aurizon.
Prior to that, he worked some 30 years in various roles for Queensland Rail, including fettler, ganger, worksite safety co-ordinator and equipment hire co-ordinator, at locations including Esk, Lowood, Linville, Manly, Cannon Hill and Brisbane City.
Mr Haylock’s death came the day after a shocking weekend on Queensland’s roads where eight people lost their lives, in part due to the atrocious weather which battered the state.
It prompted Acting Chief Superintendent Ray Rohweder to say it was one of the “darkest moments” in his 35-year career as a police officer.
