A heroic Brisbane restaurant owner, who is lucky to be alive after being run over after chasing down a thief, is close to leaving hospital and returning home to recover from his horrific injuries.

Nev Scott has been in the Princess Alexandra Hospital since last Saturday after he was seriously injured when he tried to retrieve a customer’s handbag after a woman allegedly stole it from his Bulimba restaurant, Amante Tapas, late on Saturday night.

The 46-year-old, who also owns La Quinta on Oxford St, suffered three broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a broken leg and a sprained ankle.

Two people, including a 21-year-old Springfield woman and an 18-year-old Inala man were charged following the incident.

The man was remanded in custody and reappeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court today while the woman was received bail but will reappear in June.

Mr Scott’s partner, Jeanie Smith, said he was expected to return home over the weekend despite being in extreme pain earlier in the week.

“I would say another day or so,” she said.

“The doctors will take the nerve block out of spine today and see how he manages pain.

“His appetite is slowly returning as well.”

Earlier in the week, Ms Smith said her partner was feeling awful.

“He looks awful, like he was indeed run over,” she said on Tuesday.

“The doctors said they’re not going to operate on his broken leg, they’re just going to use a moon boot.

“He’s very lucky no surgery is required.

Meanwhile, the Bulimba community has come together to help Mr Scott and his family during his recovery after fellow local business owner, Katie Boulter, started a GoFundMe page.

More than $3000 has been donated to help the father-of-one but Ms Boulter said she hoped they could reach a massive target.

“The community has been great, in under 24 hours we were nearly at $2000 but that really isn’t a surprise, the Bulimba really is a community that comes together and supports each other when they can,” she said.

“Now we’re at $3000 and I’ve made it available for Nev and Jeanie to withdraw whenever they need.”

Ms Boulter said she hoped the community could reach a $10,000 target but anymore would be a massive help.

“I started the page as I thought it would be a testing time for not only them, their family but their business both financially and also missing a big part within their team,” Ms Boulter said after starting the page.

“Nev works tirelessly in his businesses and we have seen that ourselves. After the effects of last year and now this incident I thought there could be more I could do, and the community could do to support these great people.

“I was shocked something so extreme and crazy had happened, but also felt proud to see someone being a huge part of the community and its safety.”

Ms Smith said she could not believe the amount of support that has come from the community.

“The GoFundMe page was a big surprise, we’re very grateful,” she said.

“Bulimba state school where our kids attend have reached out also, it’s all a little bit overwhelming.”

Ms Smith also said the customer who had their handbag stolen had also visited Mr Scott in hospital.
